DUBAI, June 7 (Reuters) - Al Qaeda in Iraq confirmed on Thursday the death of the group's leader Abu Musab al Zarqawi, according to a Web site posting.

"We herald the martydom of our mujahed (warrior) Sheikh Abu Musab al-Zarqawi in Iraq... and we stress that this is an honour to our nation," said a statement on an Islamist Web site, signed by Zarqawi's deputy, Abu Abdulrahman al-Iraqi.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki earlier announced Zarqawi's death.

U.S. military officer Major General William Caldwell gestures during a news conference at the fortified Green Zone in Baghdad June 12, 2006. Caldwell said Zarqawi, the former al Qaeda leader in Iraq, died 52 minutes after the first of two 500-pound (227-kg) bombs hit the building and 24 minutes after U.S. forces arrived at the scene.
