Britannica Publishes Spanish Encyclopedia Online

Enciclopedia Universal en Español is comprehensive, with in-depth coverage of Hispanic culture

CHICAGO, May 13, 2002 - Responding to the growing demand for high-quality educational materials in Spanish, Encyclopaedia Britannica, Inc. today introduced Enciclopedia Universal en Español, an online encyclopedia for schools, libraries and other organizations in the United States and Canada.

With more than 47,000 articles and 8,300 images, Universal is one of the most comprehensive encyclopedias in Spanish. In addition to broad coverage of the world and all academic subjects, it includes extensive material on the peoples, cultures, and histories of Spain and Latin America. It's designed for both native and non-native speakers of Spanish.

"There is a strong need today for a first-rate encyclopedia in Spanish," said Britannica CEO Ilan Yeshua. "Universal captures the whole range of human knowledge, with in-depth coverage of the Hispanic world. It will give everyone who works in Spanish an outstanding source of information."

Special features include:

  • a Spanish dictionary with 65,000 entries
  • an atlas with comprehensive world coverage, including national statistics, and a special focus on major world cities and the distribution of languages and religions
