Britannica's Ultimate Reference Suite Serves Knowledge Seekers of All Ages

Three Encyclopedias and Other Sources Take Users From Grade School to Graduate School and Beyond

CHICAGO, September 4, 2002 - Encyclopędia Britannica, Inc. today announced the release of its 2003 Ultimate Reference Suite, an expanded multimedia product for information seekers of all ages, from grade school to graduate school and beyond.

The new product, available on CD-ROM and DVD for Windows and Macintosh computers, breaks new ground in multimedia reference by providing comprehensive information for everyone from elementary school to adulthood in one place. The product includes three encyclopedias: the Encyclopędia Britannica and two others for students in the early and middle grades. Each encyclopedia forms the cornerstone of an integrated "reference library" that includes a dictionary, thesaurus, atlas and historical timelines appropriate to the age of the user.

"The Ultimate Reference Suite is a complete home reference source that makes finding information easy for everyone-young, old and in between," said Britannica CEO Ilan Yeshua. "Young students can use it, then advance to the next level when they're ready, and adults can use it all their lives. Because it has the Encyclopędia Britannica, you never outgrow it."

Contents include:

  • Encyclopędia Britannica(r) - The reference standard since 1768, recently revised, is ideal for in-depth research as well as finding quick facts. Ultimate Reference Suite includes the text of the Britannica and more - 75,000 articles, many written by Nobel laureates and other renowned contributors.
  • Britannica(r) Student Encyclopedia - Created by Britannica's editors for students in upper elementary, middle, and high school, these 15,000 entries are geared to school subjects and presented in a lively style that students enjoy.
  • Britannica Elementary Encyclopedia - Young students can find information almost as soon as they can read, with this special reference work written for children in the early grades and designed to instill a look-it-up habit that will stay with them in school and throughout life.
  • Merriam-Webster Dictionaries and Thesauruses - Together, Merriam-Webster's Collegiate(r) and Student dictionaries and thesauruses provide almost 555,000 definitions, synonyms, and antonyms that are easy to access from encyclopedia articles with a single click. Even young students can look up words and build their vocabularies.

Also included are a world atlas, with maps hotlinked to encyclopedia articles, timelines, 21,000 images, rich multimedia, and KnowledgeNavigator(tm), Britannica's interactive browser made for creative brainstorming and exploring different topics. Customers also get free quarterly updates and a 90-day free subscription to Britannica's online premium service (www.britannica.com).

Britannica's Ultimate Reference Suite, which is in stores now, carries a suggested retail price of $69.95. Other editions in the company's 2003 product line will be released in the months ahead.
