MAP VIEWER HELP
PROGRAM CONTROLS
There are two versions of the Map Viewer: The simpler version uses the Java AWT library ands runs under Java 1.1 (e.g. with the standard Virtual Machine of Microsoft's Internet Explorer). The other version offers more functionality. It requires Java 2 with the Swing library. Then, Sun's Java 2 Plug-In must be installed and enabled.
Java 1.1 Version:
Java 2 Version:
Zooming:
The zoom factor is 2 for [zoom in] and 0.5 for [zoom out]. The range of zooming is limited by individual bounds. The visibility of map features depends on the current map scale.
Diagram (Java 2):
The diagram icon will be enabled if a city or an administrative area is selected in the map. The diagram viewer will be started or its data will be exchanged.
Change to Pan / Zoom Mode (Java 2):
The map viewer starts in the zoom mode (see below). Then, a switch to the pan mode is possible. During the pan mode, the same button allows returning to the zoom mode.

Visualization Modes:
Unicode:
This menu entry allows alternating between the Unicode and the ANSI character set. The ANSI character set is restricted to a small set of characters. Consequently, a lot of international characters cannot be depicted. The Unicode character set - which is the default - allows depicting all international characters. However, it is not (completely) supported by all installed fonts. Therefore, the character group "Latin Extended Additional" is (currently) not used by the map viewer.

Adminitrative Areas:
The color schema for administrative areas is defined as follows (for codes see map above):

MAP IN THE POPULATION CHANGE MODE
In this visualization mode, the colors indicate the population change. Its exact value (in per cent per year) will be depicted by selecting the city or the administrative area of interest. For cities, the height of the symbol corresponds to the value of the population change.
The color schema for administrative areas is defined as follows (for codes see map above):
