INFORMATION

Official censuses and estimations are mostly the basis of the population figures presented on this web site; the definition of agglomerations is sometimes based on unofficial or own estimates. Please note that the data of such statistics are all of varying, and some of suspect accuracy. There are several reasons: the varying relevance and accuracy of the base data, the poor comparability of the definitions of agglomerations, errors in the projections and so on.

If population figures are depicted by an italic font, then they have a lower quality than the other data. Reasons may be (e.g.) that the value is based on my own estimates or calculations, that the referred area has changed its extension, or that the given population figure refers to another state or date of investigation than the other figures in the same column. For non-central cities and towns that belong to an agglomeration, the name of the central city of the agglomeration is often given as a relative link in agglomeration columns.

Valid HTML 4.01

Valid CSS

The presentation is tested by and optimized for Microsoft's Internet Explorer 6, Netscape Navigator 7, and Mozilla Firefox 1. The (transitional) HTML 4.01 standard is observed. The pages are UTF-8 encoded if necessary.

Tables with gray (button-like) column headings allow a dynamic sorting of the table content. This feature requires that JavaScript be enabled.

Java

In addition to the statistics, which are presented on HTML pages, a map viewer shows the location and population of cities and administrative areas. For executing the map viewer, JavaScript and Java must be enabled. Java 1.1 is sufficient, i.e., Microsoft's VM as well as Sun's JRE works. A Java 2 version requiring Sun's Java plug-in offers an extended functionality. The size of the map viewer is about 90kb (this number is not included in storage details given on the other pages; the first number is the size of the HTML page and the second value represents the map size).

diagrams

Using a Java 2 plug-in, the population figures can be visualized by an interactive diagram viewer. This does not work for Mozilla browsers like Firefox because of "LiveConnect" problems.

Google Earth

KMZ files allow adding placemarks to Google Earth. City Population provides such files for selected countries. Links to KMZ files can be found in the overview pages of the continents; they are marked by the KMZ symbol.

For using the City Population links in the description of the placemark, Google Earth should be operated with integrated web browser display option.
