Industry Sectors
Vigo County is home to technology firms ranging from high-profile,
publicly held companies to entrepreneurial start-ups. A traditional
sector such as manufacturing to new economy sectors like life sciences
contributes a driving force behind Vigo County’s economic
expansion.
Life Sciences
Indiana’s life sciences industry is significant because of
its size and its versatility. The life sciences industries have
high growth potential, and the job market is generally stable. In
fact, Indiana gained jobs in life sciences at more than twice the
rate of the nation from 2001 to 2003, rising 4.5 percent compared
with the 2 percent national increase. In total, more than 578,000
Indiana jobs are directly or indirectly tied to the health industry
and account for more than $21 billion in wages.
Clusters of activity in the life sciences can be found all over
the state – from Warsaw to Greater Lafayette, Terre Haute,
Indianapolis, Bloomington and Evansville – and places in between.
Indiana has the 2nd highest concentration of biopharmaceutical jobs
in the nation and the state has the 5th largest pharmaceutical industry
in the country in terms of total sales, shipments, receipts and
revenue. Indiana is home to global industry giants like Eli Lilly
and Company, Pfizer, Cook Group, Guidant, Anthem, Zimmer, Biomet,
Dow AgroSciences, Roche Diagnostics and DePuy, major research universities,
plus dozens of smaller life sciences companies.
The Vigo County area has a strong educated workforce in the medical
sciences, IT, as well as electronics. One of Indiana’s life
sciences economic development initiatives is BioCrossroads. Indiana
has a relative concentration of life science businesses that provide
the foundation of an envisioned biotech hub.

Manufacturing
The Wabash Valley Advanced Manufacturing Cluster (WVAMC) is an organization
formed by and for the manufactures located in the Wabash Valley.
The WVAMC includes six-counties in Indiana, Vigo County being one
of them, and two-counties in Illinois. The WVAMC works to solve
issues that face manufactures and seeks to improve people, process,
products and productivity in manufacturing.
Members of the Wabash Valley Advanced Manufacturing Cluster are
taking the lead in bringing Work Keys job profiling and skill assessment
services to the Wabash Valley. The WVAMC partners with educational
leaders to provide teachers with training in the Critical Thinking
process, a process that is now being incorporated into high school
curricula.
