Canadian construction company SNC-Lavalin has won a $1 billion contract to help build a major water distribution system in Libya that constitutes part of the Great Man-Made River project, Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin said on Sunday. "Today there was the signing of new contract of a value of one billion dollars between SNC-Lavalin and the (Libyan) administration," Martin told a news conference during a two-day visit to Libya.
SNC-Lavalin is expected to help complete the construction of a large man-made river project that will transport water for Libya's south from the Mediterranean coast along a distance of 4,000 km (2,500 miles).
The Canadian firm is already a partner in the project. No further details were immediately available.
Executives of SNC-Lavalin signed a memorandum of understanding to work with the Great Man- Made River Authority in manufacturing and building a pipeline to be laid over a 185-mile stretch of the project, between al- Kufrah and Tazirbu, in the Libyan eastern desert.
