Leader: World Leaders Should Take a Closer Look at Libya’s UN Proposal
07/10/2004 10:32:00

October 2, 2004

Libya's call to reform the United Nations that was made on Wednesday by the Libyan Secretary of the General People's Committee for Foreign Liaison and International Cooperation comes at the right time.

It comes after the fact that two of the Great Powers of our time, the US and UK, along with the very few mislead "coalition of the willing" that include Italy, Australia and Spain under Aznar, have premeditatedly ignored this formidable body and its charter when they illegally invaded Iraq in March 2004 and have since then been destroying it and killing and maiming its population.
Those who ignored the UN are now putting Iraq under a cruel, inhumane, immoral and civilized occupation.

In order to avoid these and other similar immoral and illegal actions on the part of some states, the international political system needs a reformed United Nations where democracy rules and morals and civilizational manners become the basis of action and debate.

Of course, Libya's proposal to hold the 60th session of the UN General Assembly next year in a neutral city such as Geneva where all leaders of the world could attend without the harassment of the American spies and ultra-right groups is a first step in the reform direction.

This is not the first time that annual sessions of the UN General Assembly have been called upon to be transferred to more secure location. But the problem has always been who would pay the bill and the extra financial burdens if the decision was undertaken.

But the Libyan Secretary said in his speech that Libya was willing to carry part of the financial cost for the sake of establishing a more democratic reformed UN.

The Libyan proposal deserves to be keenly and objectively reviewed by all world leaders, if they really desire that the UN becomes a better place and an effective world institution.
