The Partnership is requesting research proposals and infrastructure proposals for 2007. Total research awards are for approximately $5 million total costs. Total awards for investments in research infrastructure (equipment or facilities) are for approximately $3 million.

Researchers publish Alzheimer's findings

A team of researchers from the University of Minnesota and Mayo Clinic say their techniques in high resolution imaging analysis of transgenic mice, mice who have had DNA introduced into one or more of their cells artificially, could speed efforts to find new drug therapies for Alzheimer's disease. The findings, appearing in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences [Marjanska et al. (2005)102, 11906-11910.], mark the first publication of research funded by the Minnesota Partnership for Biotechnology and Medical Genomics....

The Minnesota Partnership, in cooperation with the BioBusiness Alliance of Minnesota, is spreading the word throughout the State on the benefits of bioscience. In the first of a series of conferences aimed to elevate bioscience knowledge and capture business opportunities, the Partnership co-hosted the Central Minnesota Bioscience Conference along with SICM - the Science Initiative of Central Minnesota - in St. Cloud. The morning event included presentations and panel discussions from research, government and industry representatives.

Minnesota’s biobusiness Economy assessed in report

Minnesota’s biobusiness economy is diverse, growing, and distinctive, according to a report released today by the BioBusiness Alliance of Minnesota.

Biobusiness: Minnesota’s Present Position and Future Prospects is a compilation of two independent studies conducted during 2005-2006. One study compared Minnesota’s biobusiness sector to 10 other states with similar biobusiness economic growth goals. The other study generated a census of Minnesota’s for-profit and not-for-profit organizations in both industry and academia. Additionally, the study provided an understanding of the technologies, products and markets these enterprises employ. The report contains the findings from both studies.

2005 - 2006 Research Awards

Progress Toward New Research Teams

The Minnesota Partnership for Biotechnology and Medical Genomics is awarding $15 million in state-funded research support to nine new research teams and infrastructure support for five teams of successful applicants.

The nine research winners will share roughly $9 million and conduct research on pancreatic cancer, tuberculosis and brain tumors, as well as cardiovascular, neuromuscular and autoimmune diseases. Other projects will focus on transplant rejection, drug addiction and cancer drug development. The remaining $6 million will support equipment, software and other infrastructure needs to enhance molecular research, genomics, proteomics and bioinformatics.

Minnesota Partnership Celebrates Construction of New Research Facility

The Minnesota Partnership for Biotechnology and Medical Genomics kicked off construction on a new research facility, which will be built on top of the existing Mayo Clinic Vincent A. Stabile Building, at a roof raising event held in Rochester today. The research facility will significantly enhance Minnesota's competitive position in the biosciences race, building on the strong commitment of the University of Minnesota and Mayo Clinic.

Dr. Eric Wieben, Scientific Co-Director, spoke to the Minnesota League of Cities about the economic potential of the Minnesota Partnership. The organization was holding its annual meeting in Rochester in December.
