Sweet lessons: 70th anniversary of the Berlin Airlift
The end of World War II brought on a new, different conflict - a cold war. An immediate battleground became the divided country of Germany. The Allies divided the defeated Germany with the French, British and Americans taking the western half of the nation spreading the ideals of democracy, and the Communist Russians taking the eastern half of Germany, but was still looking for more. In June 1948, Russian forces blockaded the Allied-controlled areas of Berlin, shutting off food, coal and medicine to two million Germany citizens.

Battlefield Airmen Prep Course improves attrition rates, builds more resilient candidate
The 350th Battlefield Airmen Training Squadron has implemented a nine-week preparatory course for all Battlefield Airmen candidates. Battlefield Airmen graduating from Basic Military Training will have to complete the course before transitioning into the initial entry course.

Sisters in service: Closing the joint warfighter’s diversity gap
The Joint Women’s Leadership Symposium at the San Diego Convention Center June 20-22, 2018, included attendees from the U.S. Air Force, Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and other service members from 20 different countries. As the largest gathering of military women in the nation, it marked the 31st annual symposium hosted by the Sea Service Leadership Association. While both men and women are welcome to attend, about 30 men and 1,200 women took part in the symposium.

ACC emphasizes shift in focus to cyber vigilance
Air Combat Command participated in an Air Force first by testing the reporting capabilities of a mission defense team during a base-wide exercise at Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida, June 11-15, 2018. The 325th Communications Squadron’s MDT is the first operational unit of its kind in Air Combat Command, and the base exercise emphasized the command’s cyber efforts by showcasing the unit’s communication with Joint Base Langley-Eustis’ Cyber Defense Operation Center, located in Virginia, prototype.

Air chiefs from across the Americas convene in Panama City to promote cooperation
Air force leaders from 19 nations in the Western Hemisphere met in Panama City June 18-22, 2018, for the 58th Conference of American Air Chiefs (CONJEFAMER, per its Spanish acronym). At the annual meeting, these allied nations build partnerships among air forces, discuss their collective mission and vision, and plan future exercises, continuing a 50-plus year history of cooperation and goodwill across the Americas.

Air Force Aid Society provides $1 million grant to Air Force Enlisted Village
The Air Force Aid Society announced a $1 million grant to the Air Force Enlisted Village, June 26, 2018, to complete a $3 million community center renovation project.
The grant will be used to fund construction updates to the Bob Hope Village Community Center, which will undergo a complete interior building redesign. The 30-year-old facility has historically been used for social events, fitness and wellness programs year-round for residents. The entire Bob Hope community houses more than 430 senior residents in 350 independent living apartments.
