Don't monkey around with the Air Force

SEYMOUR JOHNSON AIR FORCE BASE, NC -- At some point in our careers we've probably all been told to quit 'monkeying-around,' but for Senior Master Sgt. Michael Hartsfield that was just part of his job.

In a very unusual twist of events a privately-owned Japanese snow monkey escaped her owner in early December after her mate died. The monkey traveled more than 15 miles over a six-week period; unfortunately for her the journey came to end when she decided to breach the security gates at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.

Personnel center transforming customer-service methods

WHITEMAN AIR FORCE BASE, Mo. -- "The times, they are a-changing" may say it best for the Air Reserve Personnel Center, based in Denver, as it attempts its biggest change in personnel services yet through its Personnel Services Delivery transformation.

Department of Defense and Air Force leadership mandated the change to centralize personnel functions through Web-based applications.

U.S. Joint Forces Command seeks officers for special duty
NORFOLK, Va. -- U.S. Joint Forces Command is seeking 240 qualified officers from the different reserve components to join its Standing Joint Force Headquarters Core Element here.

These drilling reservists train and must be available for possible deployment within 72 hours in support of global contingencies. Each one belongs to a specific deployment team and is on-call to deploy during a pre-defined period of the year.

Mud and guts: Vehicle retrieval results in rescue

BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, La. -- When an Air Force reservist from here and his brother dove into a creek earlier this year to retrieve a submerged all-terrain vehicle, they found more than they expected.

26 organizations receive outstanding unit award
ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. -- Twenty-six Air Force Reserve Command organizations received the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award for 2006.

Air Force Reserve to form associate unit at Eglin
WASHINGTON -- As part of the Air Force Total Force Integration initiatives, the Air Force Reserve Command is teaming up with Air Combat Command to establish a classic associate unit with ACC units at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla. The process is tentatively scheduled to start in fiscal 2008.

Command announces financial management awards
ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. -- Eleven individuals from five organizations won Air Force Reserve Command's 2006 Outstanding Financial Management Awards.

Keesler's Flying Jennies receive final C-130J-30

KEESLER AIR FORCE BASE, Miss. -- A crew from Air Force Reserve Command's 815th Airlift Squadron delivered the unit's final C-130J-30 aircraft to Keesler Jan. 9 after accepting it from the manufacturer at Dobbins Air Reserve Base, Ga.

Maj. Gen. Hanford "Rusty" J. Moen Jr. piloted the aircraft from Georgia to Mississippi.

Grissom pilot pushes limits of aviation

GRISSOM AIR RESERVE BASE, Ind. -- His aircraft spins more than 50 consecutive times during flight and plummets toward the ground in a downward, spiral motion. Then the plane begins to perform cartwheels, a move that would invoke fear in the most seasoned pilot.

These moves don't bother Capt. Billy Werth, a KC-135R Stratotanker pilot with the 72nd Air Refueling Squadron here, because he does them in a smaller aircraft as an aerobatics stunt pilot.

Black history: Military service tradition continues
FORT WORTH, Texas -- Teacher, historian and author Carter G. Woodson proposed in 1915 a time to celebrate nationwide Negro History Week. His proposal later became Black History Month, celebrated every February.

One purpose of Black History Month is to recognize past events that affect us today.
