ATTORNEY GENERAL ANDREW CUOMO APPOINTS SPECIAL DEPUTY ATTORNEY GENERAL FOR ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
Senior Executive from the Natural Resources Defense Council to Serve as Department of Law’s Top Official on the Environment

NEW YORK, NY (February 12, 2007)—Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo today announced the appointment of Katherine Kennedy as the Special Deputy Attorney General for Environmental Protection. Attorney General Cuomo created this position to enhance the Office of the Attorney General’s emphasis on protecting New York’s air, water, and natural resources.

Ms. Kennedy has extensive experience with the environmental issues affecting New York State, including land use, energy efficiency, and air and water pollution. Among her many accomplishments, she has promoted energy efficiency standards for residential and commercial products, prevented deceptive advertising by the Nuclear Energy Institute, and stopped illegal water pollution in New York City’s fourteen sewage treatment plants.

“Kit Kennedy’s passion for protecting the environment and her expertise in energy efficiency and renewable technologies have benefited New Yorkers for over eighteen years,” said Attorney General Cuomo. “I am pleased to welcome her to the Department of Law, where she will be a leader in our efforts to prosecute polluters and defend our natural resources.”

Katherine Kennedy has served as a senior attorney and the director of the Northeast Energy Project at the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) since 1988. At the NRDC, she promoted energy efficiency and renewable technologies in New York and the northeastern United States through advocacy, legislative action, and administrative litigation. She represented the NRDC and the New York environmental community in the state proceeding that led to the adoption of New York’s renewable portfolio standard. She also represented the NRDC in federal and state regulatory proceedings and litigation to strengthen energy efficiency standards for household and commercial products. Ms. Kennedy has served as an adjunct professor of environmental law at Fordham University School of Law. She received the New York County Lawyers’ Association Award for Outstanding Public Service in 1993, and was awarded a Wasserstein Public Service Fellowship from Harvard Law School in 1999. Ms. Kennedy clerked for federal district court judge Morris E. Lasker in the Southern District of New York, and she is a graduate of Harvard Law School and Harvard College.
