Encyclopedias for All
In low income neighborhoods, there is often only one book for every 300 children. To make matters worse, these children often attend schools with empty or significantly under-funded libraries lacking reference materials. Studies show that academic achievement tends to be higher in library programs that are better staffed, better stocked, and better funded.
First Book, an award-winning 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, is now joining forces with Encyclopædia Britannica to better stock school libraries serving children from low income families. Through the Encyclopedias for All initiative, corporations and individuals are able to provide encyclopedias, other age-appropriate reference materials, and online resources to students in need as well as participate in cause-based linkages designed to highlight their support of this important cause.
“Thank you. . . especially for the books. . . the books meant so much to me and my son. It's just the two of us. That little man is my world. I don't have much but I know how important reading is. I used to like to read when I was young and I want my son to be a good reader. It's hard for us to go places because I don't have a lot of money but when we read together the books take us special places, exciting places, places we can dream about. You are all so nice, thank you for everything. God bless you all.”
—LATONYA, PARENT OF FIRST BOOK CHILD
