Encyclopædia Britannica's Community Programs
For over 235 years, Encyclopædia Britannica has recognized the importance of working with individuals and organizations that
share its mission: to improve the well-being of children through education. Today, the most critical issues facing children are
reading and literacy.
Students in significant numbers are performing below grade level in reading. More than one third of the nation’s 4th and 8th
graders tested below basic proficiency in reading.
Literacy in today's world extends beyond reading and writing. It also involves how to use computers and how to find and
evaluate information found on the internet. Children must master all of these abilities if they are to compete, to achieve, and
to succeed in the 21st century.
Britannica, through partnerships with non-profit organizations, has established national and local programs to help close the
reading and literacy gap. Through these efforts, individuals and corporate partners can help
provide books and online educational resources to students and schools in need.
Together, we can help children succeed.
