City Information

The City of American Canyon was incorporated in 1992 and is located about 35 miles northeast of San Francisco at the southern end of Napa County.  Approximately 14,306 people resided here at the beginning of 2005.

A permanent "green belt" surrounds much of the city, with the Napa River and a 500-acre wetlands preserve to the west, the 640-acre Jack & Bernice Newell Wilderness Preserve to the east, and vineyard-covered foothills of the Sulphur Springs Mountains to the northeast. Napa County Airport adjoins the city on the north and the City of Vallejo on the south.  Our major highways include Highway 29, the world famous "Napa Valley Wine Trail" that runs north and south through the City, and Highway 12 that connects with I-80 about three miles to the east and Sonoma County to the west of the City.

American Canyon recently annexed 350 acres of industrially-zoned property on the north side of Green Island Road. Another 70 acres is expected to be approved in the future that will allow development of a "Town Center" on the eastern side of the city.

It is the goal of the City, pursuant to its General Plan, to accommodate a sufficient range of uses to support the needs of a growing residential population.  The City should be a center of employment and commerce for regional, as well as local residents, and will provide an opportunity to capitalize upon the Green Island Industrial Park area, the city's proximity to Napa County Airport and Union Pacific Railroad, and the agricultural and vineyard industries of Napa County.

Current residential development in the city includes Vintage Ranch, which will ultimately see the construction of 743 single-family homes, Canyon Oaks Elementary school, three parks, and an extensive trail system on the north side of American Canyon Road, east of Highway 29. The City's non-profit housing partner, Mid-Peninsula Housing Coalition, is developing 190 affordable housing units on an 11-acre site at Vintage Ranch. Construction on the Vineyard Place and Vineyard Crossings projects is anticipated to begin in 2006 and will include single-family and multi-family rental and ownership units, as well as a community center with child care and enrichment services.

BMS Design Group has recently completed draft concept plans, and design and development standards for the Highway 29 corridor. The draft is available on the city web site for review.

The Napa Junction master plan has been approved for a 40-acre site on Highway 29, south of Napa Junction Road, that is planned to include a mix of retail and restaurant uses, apartments and a three-acre community park. The 216-unit apartment complex is under construction (developer: Fairfield Residential) and Wal-Mart Supercenter has been approved for the northern portion of the site.

A 134-room hotel is under construction on a 4.32-acre site located on the east side of Highway 29 between Antonina Avenue and Frisby Lanes. It will be constructed and operated using environmentally-sound techniques.

We are actively recruiting businesses to our city that will provide the retail services that our rapidly expanding residential community demands.  Excellent business opportunities still exist in the city along Highway 29 that provides easy access from Marin and Solano Counties and Central Napa Valley as well.  American Canyon is an opportunity awaiting you.
