Drexel Delta Zeta Chapter Wins ABC Campus Invasion Contest

Drexel's Epsilon Zeta chapter of the Delta Zeta sorority was the grand prize winner of the ABC Daytime Campus Invasion Competition.Last fall, ABC selected 15 universities across the country to see who could host the best soap opera viewing party. Sixty groups from universities such as Penn, USC and San Francisco State were given the same budget and materials to create the best viewing experience on their campuses. Epsilon Zeta produced a series of events based around All My Children and created a scrapbook that demonstrated their enthusiasm for ABC Daytime programming.

As the grand prize winner, Epsilon Zeta will be visited on campus by ABC Daytime stars. The visit will be filmed and aired nationally on ABC later this year.

Letter from Patagonia

Dr. Kenneth Lacovara, professor of bioscience and biotechnology in the College of Arts and Sciences, has returned to Patagonia to continue excavations in search of one of the most massive dinosaur fossils ever found and possibly a species unknown to science. Below is the first in a series of letters he will send to the Drexel community from Patagonia

Greetings from Patagonia . We're back in town after another 12 days at the dig site. The film crew from the Academy of Natural Sciences completed their shoot and obtained some great footage for an exhibit based on our work that will open later this year. Today, March 3, 2006, we will be joined by Drexel adjunct professor Dr. Bill Gallagher from the New Jersey State Museum, who will spend a week with us.

After rising through February, the river is dropping a little every day now as snow begins to accumulate in the nearby Andes . Daily temperature differences from morning until afternoon are as much as 50 degrees and it's almost always windy. On most days we can see it raining in the foothills, but we've lost only one day so far to weather.

Our dinosaur skeleton grows more complete and interesting each day. We made several important discoveries this week and are going through burlap and plaster at an unprecedented rate. Many of the bones we uncover display characteristics not found in other dinosaurs and point towards specialized anatomical adaptations in this species.

Our students here are brimming with grit and determination and I couldn't be more proud of them. We are headed out tomorrow for 8 days, which will be followed by one more supply run and the final push towards extraction day on Saturday, March 18.

I'll report back when I can.

All the best,
Dr. Ken Lacovara, Bioscience and Biotechnology
