How to order the most recently issued commemorative coin

You can order the commemorative coin, Carl von Linné 300 years, with effect from 14 May 2007 from AB Myntverket via its website, see the link at the bottom of the page, by telephone +46-16-42 81 00 or by fax +46-16-42 81 20.

 

Distribution of the coin will begin on 21 May 2007. The price of the gold coin is SEK 3,000 and the price of the silver coin is SEK 300. These prices include VAT but not costs for distribution (postage and possible registered/insured postage), which are additional.

 

You can order the coin up until 15 October 2007. Coins that have been ordered will be delivered up to 31 October 2007. 

 

On 10 May the Swedish post office will issue a block of stamps containing two different stamps. The stamps show Georg Dionys Ehret’s botanical illustrations from Carl von Linné’s bedroom wall at Hammarby outside Uppsala. Further information on these stamps can be obtained at www.posten.se/frim

The obverse (front) of the coin shows “the researcher’s eye” which is studying nature through a magnifying glass. The eye is a detail from A. Roslin’s portrait of Linné from 1775. At the lower edge of the picture are the artist’s initials, “AWJ”. Around the eye is the text “CAROLUS LINNAEUS 1707-2007”.

 

On the reverse (back) of the coin is a picture of a butterfly, which represents nature’s ingenious details, in a checked pattern that symbolises orderliness and systematics. Above the picture of the butterfly is the word SVERIGE (Sweden). The Latin text “NATURAE MORES DISCERE” (to learn the ways of nature) runs along the upper edge of the coin. At the lower edge of the coin is the denomination, 2000 KR (SEK 2,000). To the left of the edge is the letter “E”, which indicates the place the coin was minted and on the right are the letters “SI”, which are the initials of the Riksbank Governor.

The coin has been designed by Annie Winblad Jakubowski, a renowned artist in the field of coin and medal design. The manufacturer is AB Myntverket in Eskilstuna.

 

On the obverse (front) of the coin is a full-length portrait of Linné based on a picture by J. E. Rehn from 1774. Linné is surrounded by the modest but vigorous plant “linnaea borealis” which is named after Linné. At the lower edge of the picture are the artist’s initials, “AWJ”. Around the picture is the text “CAROLUS LINNAEUS 1707-2007”.

 

On the reverse (back) of the coin is a stylized picture of stamens and pistils, which is taken from Linné’s “Systema Naturae” from 1736, in a checked pattern that symbolises orderliness and systematics. Below the picture of stamens and pistils in a checked pattern is the word SVERIGE (Sweden). Around the upper edge is the name of the book “SYSTEMA NATURAE”. At the lower edge of the coin is the denomination, 200 KR (SEK 200). This is the artist’s interpretation of the dissolution of the union – the successful division of a former whole. The legend at the top reads "NORGE 1905 • 2005 SVERIGE" (NORWAY 1905 • 2005 SWEDEN) and at the bottom "UNIONSUPPLÖSNINGEN" (DISSOLUTION OF THE UNION). The obverse shows a well-known motif, Stockholm City Hall, Ragnar Östberg's architectural masterpiece, which was inaugurated in 1923.
 
The reverse shows Stockholm's oldest seal, dating back to the 1280s. The seal depicts a wall with two towers and pinnacles, it is a typical city seal with a castle motif. Similar seals can be found in many parts of Europe. However, the seal on the jubilee coin does not provide a realistic picture of a city in the 13th century.

The artist is Philip Nathan, the coin is minted at AB Tumba Bruk Myntverket, Eskilstuna.

 

The portrait on the obverse is based on the portrait on the Nobel prize medals made in 1901/02. Legend: NOBELPRISETS HUNDRAÅRSJUBILEUM (ONE HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE NOBEL PRIZE).
 
The reverse portrays humanity, antiquated, seated on a podium containing the Swedish national coat of arms. She is holding a copy of Alfred Nobel's will in one hand. The other hand holds a laurel wreath raised in salute to the memory of Nobel. Legend: SVERIGE/2000/KR/2001.

The artist is Philip Nathan, leading engraver of coins and medals from Surrey, England. This was the first time since the 1740s that a foreign artist had been responsible for designing a Swedish coin. AB Tumba Bruk Myntverket, Eskilstuna.
 
The obverse carries a portrait of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia in profile. To the right of the portrait is the text "KONUNG CARL XVI GUSTAF" (King Carl XVI Gustaf) and to the left the text "DROTTNING SILVIA" (Queen Silvia). Also to the right of the portrait are the artist's initials, PN. This is all contained within an outer ring comprised of small squares.
 
The reverse bears the greater national coat of arms and beneath it the sign of the Order of the Seraphim. the right, beneath the coat of arms, is the letter E (for Eskilstuna) showing where the coin was struck and to the left is the first letter in the surname of the Governor of the Riksbank, B (for Bäckström). Beneath is the text "SVERIGE 1976/19 JUNI/2001" (Sweden 1976/19 June/2001) and "200 KR" (SEK 200). This is all contained within an outer ring comprised of small squares.

The obverse contains a portrait of the King in profile. Legend above: KUNG CARL XVI GUSTAF and below SVERIGE ÅR 2000.
 
The reverse shows the king’s crowned monogram. Legend above: FÖR SVERIGE I TIDEN (FOR SWEDEN – WITH THE TIMES) and below 1 KRONA. The coin has a milled edge.
