Al-Ittihad’s Champions League Win Shows That Future Could be Bright
Suddenly it seems that Libyan football is one again catching the imagination of all sports followers, thanks mainly to two most recent favourable results on the international stage that have revived hopes for a bright future to the country’s most popular sports, by far. Champions Al-Ittihad’s 1-0 victory over JS Kabylie of Algeria in the CAF Champions League could be regarded as a surprise; however, it was an added incentive after the national team’s victory over Ethiopia.

Substitutes Spare Holders Ahli’s Blushes in Group B
Substitutes spared the blushes of CAF Champions League holders Al Ahli of Egypt when they got their goals in the last five minutes to beat Al Hilal of Sudan 2-0 in Group B in Cairo. Seeking an unprecedented third successive Champions League title, the game proved an unconvincing start to the group phase of the competition for Ahli. Strikers Flavio and Osama Hosni rescued them with last-gasp goals.

Libya Revive Hopes of Qualifying
PLAYING their best game so far in the qualifiers, Libya revived their hopes of clinching a ticket to the finals of the 2008 African Cup of Nations in Ghana next January after beating Ethiopia 3-1 in Group 10 at the June 11 Stadium in Tripoli.

It’s Do Or Die- A Must Win Situation
THIS weekend’s match (Sunday) at the June 11 Stadium in Tripoli against Ethiopia is a crunch match for Libya in the Africa Cup of Nations 2008 qualifiers. It is a do or die situation. CHELSEA’s Portuguese manager, Jose Mourinho, who is set to lose five of his squad for the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Ghana, in January, wants an agreement with African countries over the release of players for the finals.

Libyan Reversal in Namibia
Libya's national football team suffered a severe blow to its hopes of qualifying to the finals of the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations. In Namibia Libya was defeated 1-0 with a goal scored after five minutes by Said. The defeat leaves Libya ligering at the bottom of the Group 10 standings.

LIBYAN champions Al-Ittihad, regarded as outsiders in the CAF Champions League, have been drawn in a balanced African Champions League Group A that includes former champions FAR Rabat of Morocco, Jeunesse Sportive Kabylie of Algeria, and twice runners-up Etoile Sahel of Tunisia.

Al-ITTIHAD made it three football championship victories in a row, five in the last six years, and 13 since 1964 in midweek when they they retained the title, not just by beating Al-Tahaddi (1-0) in their final match, but also by virtue of Al-Ahli’s 1-2 loss against Al-Madina, which prompted the champions to start celebrating their title win a day earlier than scheduled. Al-Ittihad finished six points ahead of their Tripoli rivals Al-Ahli in second place.

Milan Get Their Revenge and Their 7th Title; Maldini his 5th
THE UEFA Champions League 2006-7 is now a part of footballing history, but 'Pippo' Inzaghi for one, will long remember the day Italian club AC Milan took sweet revenge over Liverpool for their humiliation two years ago. Inzaghi got a brace as Milan beat the English club 2-1 in the final in Athens to win their seventh European Cup title. It was Milan's seventh title in Europe and their captain, Paolo Maldini's fifth in his 20-year-career with Milan. In the end Paolo Maldini lifted the trophy in celebration (pictured)

Peerless Drogba Has First and Final Say
THE Ivory Coast striker, Didier Drogba crowned a very successful season in the English Premiership with Chelsea by scoring the only goal after 116 minutes (left) that defeated Manchester United and won the FA Cup for Chelsea last week. By maintaining a season-long ability to deliver when it mattered, he also became the first Ivorian to score at Wembley (old or new).

Ittihad Bag 13th League Title Without Even Playing
Al-Ittihad started celebrating the winning of their 13t title victory in the Libyan National Football League a day earlier than expected when their closest challengers, Al-Ahli of Tripoli lost their final match of the season, 2-1 to Madina and handed the championship to Al-Ittihad even before the Champions' final game today against Al-Tahaddi. So win or lose Ittihad will be celebrating their success as their three-point lead going into the match is unassailable.
