Market Operations Department

The Market Operations Department (MOP) works with the Riksbank’s asset management and payment system.

The department’s tasks include managing the Riksbank’s assets in the form of gold and foreign currency (i.e. the gold and foreign exchange reserve). The main objective is to generate, through long-term strategic investments and tactical management, the highest possible return on the foreign exchange reserve, given existing restrictions. This management is carried out within the overall guidelines set by the Executive Board.

The department administers and settles transactions in the Riksbank’s gold and foreign exchange reserve management. It also has the task of evaluating the results and risks of this asset management.

The Market Operations Department also contains the function that is responsible for the Riksbank’s payment system (RIX) for large-value payments in Swedish krona. The main objective is to ensure that the system is run in a safe, efficient manner.
