Bridge Replacement
Hurricane Ivan severely damaged the I-10 bridges over Escambia Bay in September 2004. Replacing the storm-damaged I-10/Escambia Bay Bridge is a top priority for the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), US Department of Transportation (US DOT) and the Federal Highway Administration. The FDOT signed a contract with a design-build firm to design and construct a new bridge.
After a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Florida Governor Jeb Bush, US DOT Secretary Mary Peters, FDOT Secretary Denver Stutler, and Director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management, Craig Fugate on Tuesday, December 19, 2006, the I-10 eastbound bridge was opened to traffic. The photos to the right are from the ceremony.
Four lanes of traffic (two in each direction) are now open on the eastbound bridge. The Scenic Highway on-ramp is also open to all vehicles. The new westbound bridge is scheduled for completion in November 2007.
Proposed Bridge
The proposed bridges will each consist of three 12-foot travel lanes and 10-foot inside and outside shoulders. The I-10 eastbound on-ramp and the I-10 westbound off-ramp at Scenic Highway will be improved. |
Progress last updated on July 30, 2007.
