El Salvador Earthquake, 2001

photograph by Eros Hoagland - Buried in seconds from a mudslide triggered by the January 7.9 earthquake, Las Colinas seconds before was a striving middle class neighborhood. Many families suffered the loss of loved ones who were at home when the tons of earth covered their homes and everything else in its path.

photograph by Eros Hoagland - The American Red Cross team in El Salvador provided daily 130,000 gallons of clean, safe drinking water to entire communities stricken by the earthquakes. In one small Salvadorian town, people wait to fill their water containers.

A young boy idly sits on one of the few pieces of furniture to survive the earthquake. The main road leading to the town of Comasagua was leveled, leaving the town practically isolated and relief workers challenged to reach the town with much needed aid.

photograph by Eros Hoagland - Receiving clean drinking water makes everyone smile. After distributing water in one community, local Red Cross Salvadorian volunteers will continue to ride the American Red Cross contracted water truck to distribute water to another community.

photograph by Eros Hoagland - The American Red Cross moved supplies from its neighboring warehouses in Honduras, Guatemala and Nicaragua for distribution along with the 10,000 blankets, 10,000 water containers, 10,000 hygiene kits and 50,000 sq. meters of plastic sheeting already available for distribution in El Salvador.

photograph by Eros Hoagland - Battling nightmares and the fear that comes from continuous aftershocks, children are among the most affected in earthquake stricken El Salvador. In the American Red Cross mental health program, children express their feelings by drawing pictures of their home and family. A young boy and girl living in Cafetelon, the mass shelter in the suburbs of El Salvador, participates in one of the mental health sessions.

The American Red Cross trained Salvadorian Red Cross mental health volunteers who then conducted the small group children sessions using the American Red Cross coloring book "After the Earthquake".
