The rule of the Ottoman Turks in Libya (1553-1912) was centralised in Tripoli, where the ruling dynasty was preoccupied with its own internal political intrigue, and filling its coffers from maritime commerce and the slave trade. The rest of the country - the three provinces of Tripolitania, Cyrenaica, and Fezzan - were left to the mercy of Turkish ‘pashas’ who acted as overseers, taxation officials, and judges.

Being part of a very large extended family in Libya (as most Libyans are) can either be an incredibly wonderful life experience, or it can be an extremely suffocating one. Tripoli is being described these days in the local media as a ‘large workshop’. Evidence of this is seen everywhere in the construction and repairs going on. Plans to improve infrastructure, roads, and buildings, are also being announced frequently in various cities and towns. Even in the extremely underdeveloped, remote area where I reside at present, these projects’ reach is felt as far as electricity and public housing go.
