SANAA: Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh was sworn in yestreday for another seven-year term following a landslide win in the country’s presidential polls, Saba news agency reported.
Saleh vowed to "pursue the democratic process, safeguard unity, security and stability, fight against poverty and create jobs" in an inaugural address.
He also spoke of "promises from Gulf Co-operation Council countries (which include Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman) to help Yemen fight against poverty and unemployment."
Their pledges were aimed at "reinforcing security and stability in the region and consolidating Yemen’s efforts in the fight against terrorism and political corruption, whether it be administrative or economic," he said.
Saleh had secured 77% of a total 5.37mn votes, far ahead of his main rival and former oil minister Faisal bin Shamlan, who won close to 22% in last week’s poll.
Bin Shamlan, announced on Tuesday his acceptance of the election results as a "reality," but said the results did not reflect the people’s will.
