The Municipality of Achilleon - Achillion Corfu
The municipality of Achilleon is located in central Corfu, along the east coast. There are several beach resorts in Achilleon, the most popular being Perama, Benitses, Moraitika, and Messonghi. Of the four, Benitses has the distinction of having a blue flag beach, though all beaches are clean and provide safe swimming.
The greatest attraction is the Achilleon palace, located just outside Gastouri. The palace was the residence of Empress Elisabeth of Austria, and was built in the summer of 1890, with the mythical Trojan hero Achilles, as the main theme. Kaiser Wilhelm later purchased the palace, and built a bridge from the palace to the beach in Benitses, where he used to anchor his yacht. Ironically, the bridge was destroyed during a German attack in WWII. The remains can still be seen today.
