Publications

The publications of the International Court of Justice are published by the Registry, in several series:

Judgments, Advisory Opinions and Orders

This series contains the decisions of the Court in both the English and French texts.  Each decision is published as soon as possible after it has been given, in an unbound fascicle, which is sold separately.  To allow for binding, a continuous system of pagination is adopted for all the fascicles of any one year.

Early each year an analytical index is published of the previous year’s decisions;  this may also be purchased separately.  A binder is available for those who have obtained the separate fascicles and index at the time of their publication.  The collected decisions, with index, for each year, may also be obtained ready bound in one volume.

Official citation of the series:  I.C.J. Reports, with an indication of the year, e.g. Fisheries Jurisdiction (Spain v. Canada), Jurisdiction of the Court, Judgment, I.C.J. Reports 1998, p. 432.

Pleadings, Oral Arguments, Documents

Volumes in this series are published after the termination of each case and contain the documentation relating to the case in the original language, i.e. English or French.  This comprises the document instituting proceedings, the written pleadings and (selected) annexes, the verbatim record of the oral proceedings, any documents submitted to the Court after the closure of the written proceedings, and selected correspondence.

Official citation:  I.C.J. Pleadings, with the short title of the case, e.g. I.C.J. Pleadings, Elettronica Sicula S.p.A. (ELSI), Vol. I.

Acts and Documents

No. 6 is the latest issue in this series (Sales No. 917).  It contains the Charter of the United Nations, the Statute and Rules of Court and Practice Directions.  Other basic texts also appear.

Official citation:  Acts and Documents No. 6.

Yearbook

In the second half of each year there appears a Yearbook in which an account is given of the work of the Court during the period from 1 August of the preceding year to 31 July of the current year.  There is also a French edition of this publication, the Annuaire.

Abbreviated reference:  I.C.J. Yearbook with an indication of the year covered, e.g. I.C.J. Yearbook 2002‑2003.

Bibliography

Each year the Registry issues a Bibliography listing such works and documents relating to the Court as have come to its attention during the previous year.

Abbreviated reference:  I.C.J. Bibliography, with the serial number of the volume, e.g. I.C.J. Bibliography No. 58.
