Retired general 'surprised' no WMD found

A former commander of United States troops in Iraq, General Tommy Franks, says he fully expected his troops to face some kind of banned weapon when they invaded Iraq last year.

Gen Franks, who is now retired, has conceded he was wrong in his estimation that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction (WMD).

The former chief of US Central Command says everyone thought that chemical, biological or nuclear weapons were a real danger to coalition troops.

"I think no one in this country probably was more surprised than I when weapons of mass destruction were not used against our troops as they moved toward Baghdad," he said.

"I fully expected that we would find those stock piles, up to this point I've been wrong in that view."
