Speech given by the Governor of the Central Bank of Malta at the annual dinner of the Institute of Financial Services - Malta - In his ninth keynote address to the annual dinner of the Institute of Financial Services, the Governor warned that against the background of increasing global competition, the growing prospect of a slowdown in external demand and mounting inflationary pressures in commodity markets, the adoption of the euro would not on its own be enough to bridge Malta’s income gap with the euro area. This objective required the removal of the remaining impediments of growth.

Central Bank of Malta leaves the central intervention rate unchanged - The Central Bank of Malta left the central intervention rate unchanged at 4.25%. The decision was taken by the Governor at the end of the Monetary Policy Advisory Council meeting held on 29 November 2007.

Central Bank of Malta Quarterly Review – Third Issue 2007 - The Central Bank of Malta has published the third issue of its Quarterly Review for 2007, which analyses economic and financial developments both in Malta and abroad during the second quarter of 2007 and into the third. The Review includes an assessment of the stability of the domestic financial system and an article which discusses the European Union’s Stability and Growth Pact in the light of recent reforms.

Public information campaign and the issue of euro kits and sets - In a press briefing held today, the Governor of the Central Bank of Malta, Michael C. Bonello, explained the initiatives taken by the Bank with regard to the information campaign on euro banknotes and coins. The Governor also gave details of how and when the different Maltese euro coin kits and sets will be available for sale.

Familiarisation with security features of euro notes and coins - The Central Bank of Malta would like to remind the public that the Maltese lira is the only legal tender currency in Malta and will remain so until Malta adopts the euro. Until that time the euro is to be treated as a foreign currency like any other.

Euro Exhibition - As part of its efforts to increase the educational awareness on the adoption of the euro, the Central Bank of Malta has set up a Euro Exhibition. The exhibition consists of 19 panels, explaining in Maltese the set up of the European Union (EU), the establishment of the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU), the Eurosystem, and the European System of Central Banks (ESCB).
