THE Libyan Football Federation, LFB is working hard to keep the momentum going after the national team’s impressive participation in the Pan Arab Games in Egypt in November. Along with national coach Fauzi Benzarti it now plans to intensify its preparations in view of its FIFA World Cup 2010 preliminary round commitments. A last-gasp goal from Younes Al Husein al-Shibane avoided defending champions Al-Ittihad the embarrassing situation of dropping two important points in a game that on paper looked ‘easy’ to win that would have also cost them the top position in the standings. As it turned out, they won their home game against Al-Olomby by 1-0

On a day in which all three promoted teams suffered losses, Alakhdar remain as the only team that could take advantage of any slips by the top two teams, Al-Ittihad and Al-Ahli of Tripoli in Libya’s top division following their convincing 4-1 away victory at newly promoted Ngom Egdabya who are finding it very difficult to cope.

By the standards they themselves set, Libyan defending champions Al-Ittihad were a disappointment in their latest match Tuesday when they won their away match at Al-Shat by 1-0. However, it was enough to help them leapfrog over Al-Ahli to reclaim the top spot, two points ahead of their rivals from the same number of matches.

Table toppers Al-Ahli of Tripoli and runners up and defending champions Al-Ittihad stride on regardless as the other teams immediately behind them are finding it very difficult to keep pace as they keep dropping points to drift even further and lessen their challenge thus confirming the fact that it will once again be a two-horse race for the league title.

League leaders Al-Ahli of Tripoli and defending champions Al-Ittihad were once again in action at the start of this week. They both won their matches with identical 2-1 scores, Al-Ahli at Al-Ouroba, and Al-Ittihad at home to Al-Jazeera.

THE national football team of Libya managed to gain four places in the FIFA World Cup ranking since last December finishing 2007 in 95th place from last year’s 99 thanks to the last two results in two matches at the Pan Arab Games before the ranking list was released. They were, a 2-1 victory over Saudi Arabia and a scoreless away draw against Egypt.

It did not take Al-Ahli long to regain their top position in the Libyan national football league standings. After losing the lead to Al-Ittihad on Sunday, Al-Ahli played their eighth match of the season Tuesday night. Unsurprisingly they beat Al Wehda on their home ground by 5-1 to climb back on top, a point ahead of the defending champions.
