Monetary Statistical Release 1/2008 - Broad money (M3) increased by Lm14.4 million (EUR 33.5 million), or 0.4%, in November. Nonetheless, its year-on-year growth rate slowed down for the second consecutive month, falling to 11.2% from 11.6% in October. Domestic credit expansion was the main factor driving monetary growth during the month.

Payment by the Central Bank of Malta of its subscription to the share capital of the European Central Bank (ECB) and the transfer of its contribution to the foreign reserve assets of the ECB - On joining the Eurosystem on 1 January 2008 the Central Bank of Malta paid up the remainder of its subscription to the capital of the ECB and also transferred its contribution to the foreign reserve assets of the ECB. The transactions took place on 2 and 3 January 2008 respectively.

Amendments to minimum reserve requirements - The Central Bank of Malta would like to inform the public that with the adoption of the euro and the transfer of responsibility for monetary policy to the European Central Bank (ECB), as from 1 January 2008 banks established in Malta will have to comply with the minimum reserve requirements set by the Governing Council of the ECB.

Central Bank of Malta reduces the central intervention rate - The Central Bank of Malta today reduced the central intervention rate by 25 basis points to 4.00% with immediate effect. The decision was taken by the Governor at the end of the Monetary Policy Advisory Council (MPAC) meeting held this morning.

Issue of coins commemorating Jean de La Valette - The Central Bank of Malta has issued a silver and a gold coin commemorating Grandmaster Jean de La Valette. The obverse of the coins shows the Emblem of Malta with the year of issue 2007. The reverse depicts Grandmaster La Valette with the dates of his birth and death (1494 - 1568). These coins are being issued under the Europa Programme 2007 with the theme ‘European Realisation’.
