Journalism internships with The Economist

The Economist has no formal training scheme. The arrangement is informal. Interns are treated much as members of staff and expected to join in accordingly.
The internships are generally for a three-month period and take place over the summer (at the London office). While we offer an interesting and rewarding work experience, there is no guarantee of a job when the internship ends. The internships are only available at our London office.
The Economist offers three internship places a year.
The Nico Colchester Prize is organised by The Economist and the Financial Times for European citizens. This prize, which takes the form of a three-month internship at either The Economist (generally in the foreign department) or the Financial Times, is advertised in February with details of how to apply.
The Richard Casement internship is for a would-be journalist to spend three months writing about science and technology. This internship is advertised in the science section of The Economist in February with details of how to apply.
The Marjorie Deane Financial Journalism Foundation offers an internship for a would-be or junior journalist to spend three months at The Economist writing about finance, in order to assist their future development and career. This internship is advertised in the finance section of The Economist in March and April with details of how to apply.
In addition to the internships above, one intern is taken in the business affairs department. If you are interested in applying for the business affairs internship, send an original unpublished article of no more than 650 words that could appear in the business or finance sections of the newspaper, along with your CV and a covering letter to Edward Carr, Business Affairs editor. Applications may be submitted at any time during the year. The deadline for submission is March 1st. The Business Affairs editor will review applications during March and a decision will be made by the end of that month.
The address for all applications is 25 St James's Street, London SW1A 1HG, United Kingdom.
