AUSTRIA - HUNGARY
AUSTRIAN - HUNGARIAN MONARCHY
In 1526 the Archduchy - later Empire - of Austria and the Kingdom of Hungary were
united in a personal union.
In the course of the following centuries this union evolved in disfavour of Hungary
and by the middle of the 19th century it actually had become an Austrian province.
After long negociations the so-called Austrian-Hungarian Compromise (Österreichisch
- Ungarischer Ausgleich) restored the personal union in 1867, only the handling of
defence, foreign affairs and finances remaining common to both states.
In 1908 the former Osmanli province of Bosnia - Hercegovina - which was governed by
Austria - Hungary since 1878 - also became part of the Monarchy.
AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN OVERSEA DEPENDENCY
Unilke the other major powers, Austria-Hungary did not build an oversea empire.
The only Austro-Hungarian "possession" was a concession in Tianjin (China) between
1902 - 1917.

In 1918, after the Austrian - Hungarian defeat in WW I, the union was dissolved,
