Sveriges Riksbank Economic Review, special Dag Hammarskjöld edition

The Riksbank is today publishing a special edition of its journal Sveriges Riksbank Economic Review devoted to Dag Hammarskjöld.

An extract from the foreword by Riksbank Governor Lars Heikensten and Björn Hasselgren, Department Head at the Riksbank:

Dag Hammarskjöld is unquestionably a person who fascinates people. Mostly he is known for his time as Secretary General to the United Nations from 1953 to 1961 and as a writer, perhaps above all for the posthumous “Markings”. His work as an economist and his contributions over almost twenty years to the Riksbank and the Swedish Finance Ministry have attracted less attention. The influence Hammarskjöld exerted in Sweden on both fiscal and monetary policy has few parallels in the twentieth century.

On 7 September the Riksbank marked the 100th anniversary of the birth of Dag Hammarskjöld with a seminar illustrating Hammarskjöld’s work as an economist and his time at the Riksbank and the Swedish Ministry of Finance.

The special edition published today contains three articles that were presented at the seminar by history professor Hans Landberg, university lecturer Örjan Appelqvist and associate professors Benny Carlsson and Göran Ahlström. The journal also contains two articles about Dag Hammarskjöld, one written by Professor Assar Lindbeck, who also conducted the seminar, and one by professor emeritus Börje Kragh.

The journal is available as a PDF-file on the Riksbank’s website, www.riksbank.se, under the heading Published/Publications. It can also be collected from the main entrance to the Riksbank at Brunkebergstorg 11 or ordered by e-mail, forradet@riksbank.se, fax +46-8-7870526 or telephone +46-8-7870000.
