Allen Memorial Art Museum

picture of allen memorial art buildingAllen Memorial Art Museum (AMAM) was the first college art museum west of the Alleghenies. It now ranks as one of the foremost college and university art museums in the country, along with those at Harvard, Yale, and Princeton. It is particularly strong in 17th-century Dutch painting, 20th-century European and American painting, contemporary art, and Japanese woodblock prints.

The art museum plays an active part in community and student life. There are many exhibitions throughout the year, as well as speakers, films, and community events. Art is not only in the museum, but also in the rooms of students. The art rental program allows students to rent works of art by Picasso, Rembrandt, and others for only $5 per semester.

Art classes draw extensively from the museum and so it is rare to be in the museum without seeing a student studying a painting or sculpture. The art department also contains exhibition space for faculty members and students, and on average, a new show is mounted every two weeks.

The building beside and behind the museum contains the art library, slide library, studios and sophisticated classrooms. Students can be found at any hour of the day or night working on art projects.
