GSEHD Fast Facts


At GSEHD, we take seriously our mission to Lead Innovation through Learning and are proud of our nationally and internationally renowned faculty, robust partnerships, and engaged students, who emerge from our programs enriched in both theory and practice and become agents of change in the education and human services fields.

A Century of Leadership

  • 1904 – GW offers education coursework
  • 1909 – GW establishes teachers college
  • 1933 – Offers doctoral program in education
  • 1954 – NCATE accreditation (continuous to present)
  • 1960’s – Special education, counseling, and human resource development programs
  • 1970 - Employee Development Program renamed Human Resource Development Program and is first in the country specifically devoted to the field of organization-based training & development/HRD
  • 1975 – Inaugural New Directions conference
  • 1977 – First Transition Special Education M.A. Program in U.S.
  • 1988 – Established first Educational Technology Leadership program
  • 1994 – Becomes Graduate School of Education and Human Development
  • 1995 – Ranked in Top 50
  • 2003 – Ranked in Top 20
  • 2006 – 13 programs nationally recognized during NCATE review
  • 2007 – Rehabilitation Counseling Program ranked 6th                                                    Education Policy Program ranked 19th

Recognition and Growth

Human Resource Development Program twice has been named Outstanding Program of the Year by the Academy of Human Resource Development (1993 and 2004)

Special Education Doctoral Program is one of GW’s Selective Excellence programs.

U.S. News & World Report Rankings:
- Ranked among top 35 graduate schools of education nationwide since 1997.
- Ranked among top 10 private schools of education
- Ranked 5th in research funding among private schools

- Rehabilitation Counseling Program is ranked 6th nationwide.
- Education Policy Program is ranked 19th.

Named by Diverse Issues in Higher Education among top 40 providers of graduate degrees to minority students.

26% unduplicated enrollment growth over the last 5 years.

Community Impact

- GSEHD has offered transition to teaching programs since 1986.

- Developed the first educational technology graduate degree offered completely at a distance

- Supported 300+ National Board-certified teachers in DC area since 1993.

- Provided professional development training in substance abuse prevention for over 600 counselors and counselor educators in the last four years.

- Prepared 21 new administrators for Norfolk Public Schools, VA.

- Trained 17 new literacy-focused teachers for service in DC schools and providing professional development for 37 in-service DC teachers.

- Counseling students contribute over 100 counseling hours per year to Friendship Public Charter Schools in Washington, DC.
