English as a Foreign Language Program - Intensive: CLED: The Center for Language, Education & Development

English as a Foreign Language Program - Intensive
Students from more than 30 countries study in small classes designed to meet their diverse language backgrounds and learning styles.  Classes focus on improving students' listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills through an integrated course approach that develops students' fluency in the English language.
Classes meet Monday through Friday between 9am and 4pm for a total of 20 hours of classroom instruction per week.  Laboratory assignments and homework require additional time each day.
Students are placed in one of six proficiency levels, Basic to Advanced, based on the results of the English Language Placement Test given during program orientation. Students at the Advanced level can be enrolled in the  English for Academic Purposes course that provides an orientation to U.S. colleges, as well as instruction in academic listening, note-taking skills, classroom and seminar discussion strategies, formal oral presentations, academic writing skills, and research skills in the field, at the library and using electronic media.

Advanced-level students who do not intend to pursue university study, but  plan to work in areas that demand a high level of English proficiency can be enrolled in an  English for Professional Purposes course. This course provides instruction and practice in listening at meetings and conferences, speaking in formal and informal work settings, making oral presentations, and gathering and utilizing information through interviews and non-library based research.
To further prepare students for university study, the EFL program offers:
The Access D.C. program offers field trips and activities on the weekends for students to explore Washington, D.C. and the surrounding region.  Interact D.C. brings weekly speakers to campus to discuss a broad range of topics of interest to students.  News of the Week,  the program's weekly newsletter, informs students about campus events including lectures, sports events, theatrical and musical performances, as well providing information about events in the city.
