Graduate Student Research

The Graduate School, in cooperation with the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP), is available to assist graduate students seeking extramural research funding.  OSP offers electronic access to computerized data bases containing sources of research funding as well as links to web sites of a number of public and private grant-making institutions.  Similarly, the Graduate School provides guidance with preparing the proposal for review and submission to OSP, and subsequently works collaboratively with that office to ensure that it is in the appropriate format for submission to the sponsor.  Moreover, the Graduate School is also available to assist individual students in conducting specialized searches for external support.

Grants Administrator Support

The Graduate School's Grants Administrators, Will Plummer and Maria Snyder, are available to provide guidance in securing external support.  Mr. Plummer provides assistance to faculty and graduate students in the Sciences;  Ms. Snyder to those in the Humanities and Social/Behavioral Sciences.  These positions are dedicated to conduct external funding searches, offer assistance with proposal writing and budget preparation, and guidance on navigating the electronic application submission processes required by many government and private agencies and foundations.

External Funding Resources

In an effort to further encourage extramural research, we have provided below links to three pages on this site containing the most current funding information.  As this information is updated on a regular basis, we encourage you to visit at least once a week so that you may be kept abreast of the many and varied external funding resources available to you as scholars in the social and behavioral sciences.  Additionally, ABD candidates are strongly encouraged to also visit our "Extramural Research - Grants and Fellowships" page, which is primarily dedicated to faculty external research support, for grant and fellowship opportunities open to recent Ph.Ds.  Lastly, we have also provided a link to the Fellowship Secretary's page (Office of the Provost), which provides information on funding programs for graduate students administered through that office.

Community of Science:  The Graduate School has an annual membership with the Community of Science, "the leading global resource for hard-to-find information critical to scientific research and other projects across all disciplines."  On a weekly basis, the Graduate School (vis a vis Maria Snyder) receives information regarding new funding opportunities in the social sciences and humanities from all sorts of funding venues -- be they federal, private, non-profit, or academic; these announcements are included on the "External Funding" page.  For those wishing to receive more specific funding information, we encourage you to visit the site to create your own personalized "Research Workbench," which will generate a "funding alert" sent to you via e-mail or to your "workbench" and which caters to your research interests/trajectory.  There is no fee for this service for Georgetown faculty and graduate students on the Main Campus.

If you have questions regarding any of the above or would like assistance with preparing a proposal, please contact Will Plummer or Maria Snyder
