Almost
all-training activities are conducted at the LAC+USC Medical
Center, which offers a total of 130 resident GY-1 positions
and 700 GY-2 through GY-7 positions. Most training programs
provide rotations for their residents to the USC University
Hospital, Norris Cancer Hospital and Research Center, Doheny
Eye Institute and seven other nearby major community Medical
Centers. In addition, affiliated resident physicians from
other hospitals come to the LAC+USC Medical Center for a portion
of their training, as do Fellows from the Keck School of Medicine
to conduct clinical investigations. USC Medical, Pharmacy,
and Physician Assistant students receive their clinical training
here. The Medical Center has a School of Nursing, and provides
training to dental students, clinical laboratory technologists,
x-ray technicians, physical therapy, occupational therapy,
respiratory care practitioners, dieticians, and other health
professionals.
Bedside or clinically based teaching, chiefly with reference
to specific case material, is emphasized. Daily organized
ward rounds conducted by the full-time and voluntary attending
staff permit ample instruction in all aspects of clinical
medicine. The psychological, social and economic, as well
as somatic aspects of various diseases are also emphasized.
The housestaff is given integrated, progressively graded clinical
responsibility (under supervision) in actual patient management
and operative procedures. Exposure to community health programs
is also given.
Conferences, seminars, lectures and journal clubs augment
bedside teaching. Clinical pathologic conferences afford opportunities
for correlation of clinical and pathological findings, comparison
with reports in the literature, and critical analysis of management.
Housestaff are encouraged to "follow up" patients
when they have been discharged to outpatient care, affording
an opportunity for gaining experience in continuity of medical
care.
Housestaff often attend local medical meetings, many of which
are held within the Medical Center. The medical schools at
USC and UCLA provide many lectures, symposia, and continuing
postgraduate educational courses for physicians.
The faculty under the auspices of the Keck School of Medicine
and the affiliated Health Research Association undertake a
great deal of clinical investigation. There are physical facilities
for research at the Medical Center. The research facilities
of the Keck School of Medicine are immediately adjacent to
the hospital. The housestaff is encouraged to participate
in research projects as a part of their training. The annual
research budget for the Medical Center and the Keck School
is in excess of 40 million dollars.
