This year’s law graduates will be the first recipients of the Juris Doctor (JD) degree on April 28, 2008 when graduation rites will be held. The change in degree title from Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) to Juris Doctor (JD) degree was approved by the University of the Philippines President, Dr. Emerlinda R. Roman , on July 31, 2007.The U.P. Law community welcomes this move by the administration.
The LL.B. nomenclature does not accurately reflect the fact that the law degree is a professional as well as a post baccalaureate degree. It is different from the Bachelor of Arts or Science degrees which entering freshmen direct from high school can pursue.Under the Rules of Court promulgated by the Supreme Court, persons who wish to enroll in law school must already possess, among others, a Bachelor’s degree.
The U.P.College of Law Faculty is firmly convinced that granting their graduates the J.D. degree is an appropriate measure to take to enhance their standing in the international legal community.Their international counterparts have long been recognized as J.D. degree holders. It is about time that they be granted the same privilege.
