Britannica Ready Reference
If
you receive an error message similar to the one below when trying
to start the Britannica program, you may be missing a necessary
component of QuickTime:
"Application could
not be initialized, please reinstall"
The missing component is a result of installing
QuickTime 6 as an original version, instead of as an upgrade
from QuickTime 5. If you perform an original installation (or
a fresh installation) of QuickTime 6, a component called QuickTime
for Java is excluded from the installation.
In order to correct this issue, you can
simply run the Quicktime Updater and download the necessary
components:
1. Connect to the Internet.
2. Click on Start > Programs (or All Programs)
> Quicktime.
3. Click on the Quicktime Updater icon.
4. At the update screen, click the Custom button.
5. From the list displayed, select Quicktime for Java,
Quicktime Internet Extras, and Quicktime Music
from the list, then click on Update Now.
Once the above components have been downloaded
and installed, the Britannica program should run without difficulty.
In some cases, simply installing the QuickTime
for Java component will not correct this issue. If this happens,
please uninstall and reinstall the Britannica CD to see if the
problem is resolved. If not, you may need to completely uninstall
and reinstall QuickTime:
You can uninstall QuickTime 6 by using
the Windows uninstall wizard, which is called Add/Remove Programs:
1. Click on Start
> Settings > Control Panel.
2. Double-click on Add/Remove Programs.
3. Select QuickTime from the list of installed programs.
4. Click the Add/Remove button. Additionally, you may
see a prompt asking you whether you want to 'Uninstall Everything.'
Please select the Uninstall Everything button, so that
all component files are removed prior to reinstalling Quicktime
6.
Note: You may see a prompt regarding
uninstalling shared files; click the Yes to All button.
These programs are only related to QuickTime and are safe to
uninstall.
Once you have removed QuickTime from your
computer, you must download the QuickTime installer and save
it to your Desktop.

On the QuickTime download page, be sure
to change the download option to QuickTime instead of
iTunes and QuickTime'. Otherwise, you will not be able to access
the 'Custom' installation option as noted below.
During the installation, there is a Custom
option for QuickTime 6. Read each screen of the installation
carefully. When you are installing QuickTime 6, you will see
a screen entitled Choose Installation Type. You will
select the Custom radio button on this screen. Once you
have selected Custom, please click the Next button. A
new screen will appear-scroll through the list of components
to locate QuickTime for Java and QuickTime Music.
Once you have located QuickTime for Java and QuickTime Music,
please select these components by placing a checkmark next to
them. Once you have selected QuickTime for Java and QuickTime
Music, click Next and continue with the installation
of QuickTime.
