As of 2009, the Riksbank will use circulation coins to celebrate events of national interest instead of commemorative coins. Special commemorative coins will be issued less frequently. In 2009 attention will be drawn to the relationship between Sweden and Finland with a special minting on one side of the 1-krona coin.
Minting of circulation coins will mean that the motif will be widely circulated and will be recognised by the general public. This is very much in line with the purpose – to celebrate events of national interest.
The Riksbank will still be able to issue commemorative coins, but this right will be reserved for events of particular importance to the nation.
In 2009 the Riksbank will draw attention to its relationship with Finland with a special minting on one side of the 1-krona coin to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Finland’s separation from Sweden.
Circulation coins with special minting have occurred on two previous occasions; the 1-krona coin in 2000 (the turn of the millennium) and the 5-krona coin in 1995 (the UN’s 50th anniversary).
The 2008 commemorative coin, which will be launched in March, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Selma Lagerlöf is a commemorative coin minted in gold and silver.
