Sweden's GDP: + 0.6 percent in second quarter 2008

Sweden's GDP rose by 0.6 percent during the second quarter, calendar-adjusted and compared to the second quarter of 2007.

Increase in the number of permanently employed

In August 4 685 000 (± 37 000) persons aged 15-74 years were employed. The number of permanently employed increased while the number of temporarily employed decreased. In August 256 000 (± 18 000) persons, or 5.2 (± 0.4) percent of the labour force, were unemployed.

Economic activity up slightly in July

The Activity Index, which measures the activity in the Swedish economy, increased slightly in July 2008. The change in the trend was 0.1 percent in July, which corresponds to an annual rate of 1.7 percent.

increased in July

According to preliminary estimates, total industrial production increased (NACE C+D) by 1.2 percent in July compared to June. The industrial production was unchanged from February-April to May-July.

Increased borrowing abroad

Swedish banks continued to issue long and short term securities in foreign currencies in July, resulting in a net capital inflow of SEK 57.6 and SEK 14.0 billion respectively.

New orders to Swedish industry
up in July

According to preliminary estimates, new orders increased by 1.0 percent from June to July. New orders for the last three months (May-July) increased by 5.7 percent compared to the preceding three months (February-April).

Female professors still in minority

In total, the distribution among the sexes in higher education is even with 51 percent women and 49 percent men. But the distribution varies considerably depending on the type of employment. Even though the number of professors has doubled over the last ten years, 18 percent of professors are women. These are the latest findings of new statistics from Swedish National Agency for Higher Education and Statistics Sweden.
