Mission:
UNITAS is a living and learning community dedicated to building community, tolerance and understanding amongst individuals of diverse backgrounds; and spreading these values throughout the larger community.

Brief Overview:
UNITAS is a cultural diversity learning community committed to helping students discover similarities through differences. Our group actively works to erase stereotypes and prejudice based on gender, race, nationality, religion and sexual orientation. In order to break down cultural barriers, all residents are assigned roommates based on their cultural and/or racial differences rather than similarities.

Community Structure:
UNITAS is sponsored and supported by the Department of Anthropology, Department of Housing and Residential Education and APPLES service-learning. Students are expected to fully engage in collaborative learning while living in our residence hall, in the classroom and participating in a service project for the year.

  • Educational experience- Participants are required to complete fall and spring coursework. Coursework will include completing related readings, reflection papers, final research project, and/or special events as designated by instructors.
  • Residential experience- As a living and learning community UNITAS members will plan, promote and participate in programs that cultivate meaningful relationships with its member and encourage collaborations with organizations throughout campus.
  • Service experience-Participants are expected to participate in an APPLES service-learning project related to a topic researched in the fall semester.

Leadership and Involvement Opportunities:
UNITAS is a student-governed learning community. Students are elected into positions that make up the UNITAS Executive Board. The board is responsible for the administration and governing of the UNITAS program. The board is also the body which selects the participants for UNITAS. Members consist of a Chair, Coordinator, Secretary, Treasurer, two Publicity Chairs, two Social Chairs, and one Historian. The committee also includes Members at Large during the academic year. These are members which are in their 1st-year as UNITAS participants.

Admission Criteria:
Students accepted into UNITAS should express an interest living in a community whose primary focus is learning while living with others from diverse backgrounds and at the same time fostering a community that emphasizes respect, tolerance and consideration for people from various gender, races, nationalities, religious beliefs and sexual orientations.

Why you should consider UNITAS living learning community:
UNITAS provides a welcoming and open-minded community for residents interested in diversity. UNITAS allows you to interact with people from unique backgrounds and have meaningful personal interactions while providing opportunities to foster friendships that are life-long. UNITAS allows students to engage in an intense experience in diversity and thoughtful self-exploration.
