Madoff detained in his New York apartment

Bernard Madoff, the New York financier accused of perpetrating an alleged $50bn fraud, was yesterday ordered into house detention in his Manhattan apartment as his bail hearing was postponed for a second time.

A US district court magistrate judge modified the conditions of Mr Madoff's bail to include electronic monitoring and the surrender of his wife's passport, according to court papers, after Mr Madoff appeared unable to meet some of his original bail conditions.
