Free Kentucky Tax Return Filing Assistance

Friday January 16, 2009
What would you do with a bigger tax return than you expected? Pay off a debt? Make home repairs? Use it to catch up on bills after an unexpected layoff or furlough? It's that time of year again when people start thinking about filing their tax returns, and it might be more important than ever for some Louisville families to get the largest tax return possible this year.

Part of getting the largest return includes not paying someone to do your taxes for you. However, it's hard to know when doing your taxes for yourself if you're getting all of the credits you're entitled to. Luckily, there are nearly 200 sites around the state this year where you can get free help filing your taxes from IRS-certified volunteers (Find a Site Near You).

  • Watch the 2009 presidential Inauguration presented by MSNBC at Louisville's Cinema de Lux 20. Tickets to the event are free, but seats will be given out on a first come, first served basis (Learn More).

Share Your New Year's Resolutions

Monday January 12, 2009
The folks over at Possibility City have created this cool webpage where Louisvillians can share their New Year's resolutions with others in the city. It's also a good place to find ideas for resolutions for those of you who can't think of a goal to strive toward. My favorite: "I promise to use Possibility City – and not Gotham City – as my home address when filling out online forms." What a great idea!

Interesting News of the Week

Friday January 9, 2009
Derby Festival Basketball Classic Tickets on Sale: Tickets for the 2009 Derby Festival Basketball Classic went on sale Monday (1/5) and are available through Ticketmaster. The 2009 Derby Festival Basketball Classic will be played on Saturday, April 11, at Freedom Hall.

Speaking of Stimulus Money: Mayor Abramson should take this guy with him when he meets with Obama to try to get some economic stimulus money for the city.

Foreclosure, Bankruptcy, Divorce, and Small Claims: If you need to file for or learn more about one of these unpleasant legal matters, you'll definitely want to attend one of the free clinics about them being offered in January and February by the Legal Aid Society.

Lucky Bluegrass Ball Attendees: Chef Michael Paley of Louisville's Proof on Main is preparing the menu for the pre-Inauguration Bluegrass Ball. I'm so jealous. The food at Proof on Main is amazing, but it's not often I can justify spending so much on a meal.

You Mean It's Not a Midget Village?: I was so sad to find out that the neighborhood with all of the tiny houses that my mom and I used to visit occasionally when I was a kid isn't really a midget town. The real story is much less interesting.

More Recycling News: The Louisville Zoo was recognized by ECO-CELL this week as having the number one cell phone recycling program in the nation. Now you know where to drop off that old cell phone that you can't pawn off on your friends or sell on ebay.
