Gene Therapy Stops Gum Disease

Wednesday December 17, 2008
A significant development has been made in fighting gum disease. University of Michigan researchers have successfully conducted a round of testing that shows that gene therapy, which transfers genes in to cells, is also effective at stopping periodontal disease, or gum disease, an infection in the gums around the teeth. Gene therapy in the oral cavity is highly beneficial, because if gum disease goes untreated, bacteria can spread to other parts of the body, causing “heart disease, bacterial pneumonia and stroke.” Beyond periodontal disease, this study also showed that this particular gene therapy had an added benefit: since "people with rheumatoid arthritis are four times more likely to also be afflicted with periodontitis," those in the study who also have rheumatoid arthritis saw decreases in pain and improvements in movement. As more testing continues, it will be exciting to see where this goes.
