What Will Michelle Obama Wear?

Friday January 16, 2009
Will the new First Lady choose an American designer or will Michelle Obama select a dress from a European house? Will she wear something classically elegant (Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera) or will she opt for something edgier (Rodarte, Zac Posen)? And the color: will it be strong, clear brights (red, electric blue) or neutrals (navy, black, cream)?

I wish I had some sort of inside sneak peek to give you, but because her inaugural outfits are a closely guarded secret all I can offer is speculation. I would love it if Michelle Obama would choose an American designer (even better: an American woman designer). I think she may opt for a classic look with a bit of a twist, possibly something one-shouldered to serve as a face-flattering feature because she's done that before with pearls, bows, etc. And finally, because the First Lady's dress is an important message to set the tone for her role in the administration, I think she may choose a strong color like red (strength) or blue (trustworthiness) , possibly even yellow (optimism).

We'll find out Tuesday, and we'll have details of all of her inaugural outfits here.

Own a Piece of (Designer) History with Inaugural Collections

Wednesday January 14, 2009
Tory Burch, Diane von Furstenberg, Donna Karan and other major designers have created pieces especially for the inauguration. Tory Burch and DVF each did a canvas tote ($70) with their individual interpretations of President Obama. Zac Posen, Donna Karan and Derek Lam all created T-shirts ($45) and Alexander Wang has created a $40 scarf. The collection is available at the Presidential Inaugural Store located at 625 E Street NW in Washington, DC, or at the PIC Online Store.

Steal This Look: Golden Globes Dresses Under $200

Tuesday January 13, 2009
Love the red carpet styles of Angelina, JLo and Salma? We've got lookalike dresses with all of the style, none of the designer price tags, like this short gold dress for just $49 that has all of the sex appeal of Jennifer Lopez' golden Marchesa dress (which is priced in the thousands).

Miley, Drew, Angelina: Who I Dished About on Radio

Tuesday January 13, 2009
One of the really fun parts of my job here at About.com is that I get called on by other media to comment on just about everything involving fashion, including the Golden Globes. Here are the highlights from one radio interview:
  • On Angelina: I admitted she looked merely OK (I was not a fan of the blouson look and drab locks), but we could forgive her because she has 6 kids.
  • On Miley: When asked at what age it was appropriate to wear a cleavage-baring gown, I popped off that I wouldn’t let my daughter wear a dress like that (of course, my daughter’s just 6...).
  • On Drew: When asked about Mickey Rourke’s outfit, I said he should have been Drew Barrymore’s date (between her wacky hair and his goofy scarf/glasses/hair they would have cornered the market on crazy).

Do you agree with my assessment of the Golden Globes red carpet? I hope not, because I think it's more fun when there's lots of discussion involved. Ask 10 different fashionistas who they did or didn't like and you'll get 10 different answers. I tend to give liberal points to the celebrity who makes an effort to make a unique fashion statement. It's safe to show up in a strapless gown, red lipstick and neat bun. But real fashion is anything but safe.
