The List ...

Wednesday January 14, 2009
Where should you stay if you want to see and be seen? What hotel has the best casino on the island? Where should you head for a complete escape? I have those answers and more in my List of the Best Puerto Rico Hotels for .... well, click and find out. This isn't your typical list of best hotels, most romantic places to stay, or cheapest lodgings around the island. I've already got those covered.

No, this is a little different, a compilation of some of the most interesting and unique places to stay in Puerto Rico. Like, for example, the hotel that was built and designed as a tribute to love; or the one that was designed by an internationally recognized fashion designer. Ten hotels, ten different ways that they are special ... that's what this list is all about.

Seeing Celine in Style at the Holiday Inn

Monday January 12, 2009
One of the big events headlining this month's Calendar of Events is Celine Dion's "Taking Chances" World Tour, which comes to Puerto Rico's Coliseum in on January 31. Fans of hers who want to travel to Puerto Rico (or simply those who need an additional reason to visit the island) might want to check out the VIP Package offered by the Holiday Inn San Juan in Isla Verde. One of the newer hotels on the island, the recently upgraded property is putting together a special promotion that features:
  • A two night/three day weekend stay, including taxes and fees
  • Transfers to and from the event
  • VIP entrance to the arena and access to private VIP Lounge during the concert
  • A welcoming rum drink from Rums of Puerto Rico and daily full American breakfast
  • A 15 per cent discount on meals in the hotel’s three restaurants
The package is $438.00 per person, based on double room occupancy, and runs from January 30 to February 1. Of course, the day after the concert, you might just want to walk a few steps over to Isla Verde Beach and spend a lazy day recuperating.

Unusual Facts About Puerto Rico

Friday January 9, 2009
Sticking to the theme of what people don't always know about the island, here are a few statisitcs, facts and details that you may not be aware of, but could affect your vacation:
  1. Drinking Age: The legal drinking age in Puerto Rico is 18. No matter what your age is, you can't drink on the street in Old San Juan.
  2. Gambling: Given the number of casinos on the island, this may not be a real surprise, but gambling is legal all over the island. However, only hotels are allowed to have casinos.
  3. Road Rules: For some reason, gas is sold by the liter, but distance is measured in kilometers. To make things even more confusing, speed is measured in miles per hour. The legal driving age is 16.
  4. Time: There is no Daylight Savings Time in Puerto Rico, which is always on Atlantic Standard Time.
  5. Language: Puerto Rico has two official languages: Spanish and English.

And how about a massive pillar of clay and granite to mark 500 years of Columbus' discovery of the New World? All these oddities and others comprise a photo gallery called Unusual Puerto Rico. It's a compilation of some of the interesting and lesser known, or lesser visited parts of the island. Take a look ... I dare you'll find at least one or two surprising things about the island.
