Howie Mandel on Mysophobia and Hospitalization

Friday January 16, 2009

Howie Mandel has long been public about his mysophobia, or fear of germs. Now he has gone on record discussing the impact of the disorder on his recent hospitalization. In a People Magazine article, Mandel explained that he refused to change into a hospital gown. Instead, he remained fully clothed, including boots, throughout his stay.

Take a look at "Mysophobia" for more information on this common phobia. I also invite you to share your experiences and thoughts.

Paul McCartney on Stage Fright

Wednesday January 14, 2009

Former Beatle and successful solo artist Paul McCartney appeared on The View today. Eventually the conversation turned to stage fright, or the fear of performing in public. According to McCartney, he suffers from a mild form of this phobia, and becomes nervous before every show.

McCartney believes that a bit of stage fright is good, keeping the performer from becoming blase. Of course, he recognizes that a more severe form could become disabling. His solution is somewhat unusual among the general public, although relatively common among performers. He actually focuses on individual members of his audience, drawing strength and calm from the excitement and appreciation in their eyes.

McCartney also revealed another coping mechanism that many performers use. He carefully, yet almost instinctively, separates the famous side of himself from the private side. He finds that it is easier to play the role of his legendary persona, rather than entirely revealing his full personality.

I invite you to take a look at "Stage Fright" for more on this unique yet common phobia.

Coping With Phobias During the Holidays

Thursday December 18, 2008

The holidays are a stressful time for anyone. Financial concerns, conflicting obligations and the stress of trying to create the perfect Norman Rockwell scene can worsen even mild anxiety disorders. In addition, many phobias are particularly triggered during this time of year.

If you are having difficulty coping, I invite you to work your way through the Coping With Phobias section of this site. In addition, I have opened up a discussion on the forums specifically for sharing your holiday stories. Whatever your particular phobia may be, and whatever winter holidays you might celebrate, all are welcome. Caregivers and loved ones are encouraged to share as well. Happy holidays!
