Bitter Cold Temps Break Records

Friday January 16, 2009
The National Weather Service at Bismarck, North Dakota, reports that the temperature dropped to 44 degrees below zero. This broke the record low of 36 degrees below zero set on January 15, 1971. Many locations have wind chill temperatures even lower. At 44 below zero, even 10 minutes exposure with virtually no wind can put a person in danger of frostbite. Wind chill temperatures are calculated using a formula. Luckily, an easy to use free wind chill chart makes determining the wind chill factor very easy.

A New Weather Widget Exposed in Las Vegas

Wednesday January 14, 2009
I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this year. Introduced at the show was a brand new way to get your local or national weather forecast. It seems the days of reading the teensy-tiny scroll of weather across the bottom of the TV may be over. Introduced at the show was a prototype weather widget on a television set enabled to handle widgets.

In case you are unfamiliar with widgets, these unique snips of code enable users to add a widget of interest to any website. In fact, you can even add my weather blog to your own website by clicking the image . The Widget Channel was developed by Yahoo! Inc. and Intel Corp. and can be incorporated into LCD TV/DVD combinations or in a standalone player. The technology promises to bring the best of the internet to your television. What do you think? Does this sound like a great new technology? Sound off below.

The Buffalo Bills are StormReady®

Tuesday January 13, 2009
The NFL has noticed the United States is one of the most dangerous places for severe weather for 5 reasons. On January 13, 2008, the Buffalo Bills will become the first NFL team to be officially declared as StormReady® by meteorologists at the local Buffalo National Weather Service Office.

Each year, Americans cope with an average of 10,000 thunderstorms, 5,000 floods, 1,000 tornadoes, and an average of 2 landfalling deadly hurricanes. In addition, 90% of all presidentially declared disasters are weather related causing billions in damages. StormReady® began in 1999 as a safety education program dedicated to improving the preparedness of communities for damaging storms. To achieve this status, the Buffalo Bills met rigorous guidelines, which include developing severe weather safety plans, actively promoting severe weather safety through awareness activities, and conducting safety training in an effort to better protect fans and spectators of events at Ralph Wilson Stadium.
