Yankees, Angels GMs react to Sox message on Teixeira

Posted by Steve Silva, Boston.com Staff December 19, 2008 08:23 AM

In our roundup of all things Teixeira this morning, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman and Angels GM Tony Reagins reacted to Red Sox owner John Henry's announcement last night that his club would not be a factor in the pursuit of free agent Mark Teixeira. And according to multiple reports, the Red Sox are not out of the Teixeira hunt.

George King in the New York Post writes today that the Yankees are not one of the teams that outbid the Red Sox for Teixeira's services.

The Red Sox say they got outbid for free agent first baseman Mark Teixeira. Though Boston didn't talk about which teams offered more for the switch-hitting Teixeira, it wasn't the Yankees.

"Not us," Cashman told The Post late last night.

In today's Los Angeles Times, Mike DiGiovanna has the Angels' Reagins responding to Henry's late-night e-mail:

Reagins had not been informed of any Teixeira decision by early Thursday evening, and he refused to concede anything to the Red Sox.

"It just means he's pursuing his options and will make a decision at some point," Reagins said. "Until that happens, we're still in the game. . . . We made a substantial offer, and they have an opportunity to accept."

Is the Angels' bid a final offer?

"I would say it's a fair offer," Reagins said.

Informed of Henry's e-mail later Thursday evening, Reagins called it "an interesting turn of events. . . . Beyond that, I have no knowledge of it, so it wouldn't be fair to comment about it."

According to DiGiovanna's report, the Red Sox offer for Teixeira exceeds what the Angels have presented:

The Red Sox were believed to have offered Teixeira an eight-year deal in the $175-million range, and a source who is familiar with negotiations but is not authorized to speak about them on the record said it was "significantly" better than the Angels' offer.

In the Herald's Red Sox blog early this morning, Michael Silverman has an e-mail from agent Scott Boras on Teixeira's next steps:

“The Boston ownership was kind enough to request and travel to meet with Mark Teixeira. While it was a very positive meeting Mark was candid and advised he is in the process of making a decision and is now attempting to eliminate teams.”

In today's Washington Post, Chico Harlin writes that the Nationals are still in the Teixeira hunt, and are waiting on a decision.

FoxSports.com's Ken Rosenthal still believes the Red Sox will be the eventual landing spot for Teixeira, but questions if the free agent is worth the money reportedly on the table:

Wherever Teixeira ends up, and Boston is still the best guess, his deal is certain to exceed the eight-year, $160 million deal that Ramirez signed with the Red Sox in 2000 -- a deal that included $31 million in deferred payments, significantly reducing its present-day value.

Then the question will become: Is "Tex" worth it?

Aside from the obvious, "No player is" -- especially in the middle of a worldwide economic crisis -- the answer is indeed arguable.

Among active players, Teixeira ranks only 19th in adjusted OPS -- his rate above the league average expressed as a percentage.

Pujols is first in that statistic, Ramirez third and A-Rod tied for sixth. Teixeira is just behind David Ortiz, just ahead of Jason Bay and J.D. Drew. Nothing spectacular.

To view Teixeira in simpler terms, he never has finished higher than seventh in the MVP balloting -- seventh!

SI.com's Jon Heyman joins the chorus that says the Sox are not out of it yet:

The Red Sox haven't given up on the idea of signing Mark Teixeira, according to multiple baseball sources. They are just taking a break from the bidding.

Though Boston's chances to land the multitalented free-agent slugger may have diminished slightly after the sides failed to make progress in their high-powered Texas meeting Thursday night, few baseball people believe the Red Sox are completely out of the picture.

At least a half-dozen baseball executives with some knowledge of the process suggested to SI.com that the Red Sox remain interested in Teixeira and are merely intent on sticking to their last proposal (which one source pegged at close to but probably not more than $180 million for eight years). While none of these people were in the room in Dallas where Red Sox owner John Henry and general manager Theo Epstein met with Teixeira and his agent, Scott Boras, they all have some peripheral knowledge of the negotiations.

Meanwhile, Red Sox GM Theo Epstein and manager Terry Francona were scheduled to celebrate the announcement of a new partnership with JetBlue Airways at Logan International Airport at 2 p.m. this afternoon.

  1. All great points by Rosenthal as usual. Memo to the Sox managment:
    THIS GUY'S NOT THAT GOOD!

Considering he hit in hitter-friendly Texas and against crappy pitching in the AL West, his numbers weren't that good. Youk has a better long-term upside, and its not even close. You can get him for cheaper and wait till next year when a better hitter comes along.

We were a healthy Beckett away from the Series last year. I'm just sayin', we don't need to over pay to improve the lineup like the clowns to the south.

  1. At this point I honestly don't care. If Tex doesn't want to be in Boston, no worries. Look how far we got this past season. Why should the Red Sox throw bags of money and these guys or have to lock them up for too many years when we already have a winning team. This deal wont make us or break us.

If he's really a baseball guy and wants to play for winners he'll come to Boston.
    The end.

  1. This is great. Boras just overplayed his hand ONCE AGAIN! The Sox have the biggest offer on the table, and Boras is trying to play them off a mystery team with a bigger offer that doesn't exist. The Sox read right through it and called his bluff.

If he pulls it off, this will be Theo's master stroke.

  1. I think this is a brilliant move and negotiating tactic by the Sox brass. Boras is trying to milk ebvry last penny out of any deal he gets and no that all the chips are down, we'll find out what Mark Texiera is all about.....money or the cahcne to win a World Series. If it is the former, he's not the kind of player that Boston wants anyways.....we just got rid of one of those last year at the trade deadline. Let the Nats, Baltimore or the Yankees sign a me-first players that will drag down their payroll for years to come. Besides, the Yankees will never win a World Series as long as ARod is on the roster....he is a jinx....

  1. Spend money on Papelbon, Yook, Bay and yes, even TEK. Lowell will bounce back. If not, go get Holiday

TEX is a fine hitter, but he is not Manny. He showed no power in ALDS when it was needed.

  1. I would love to see Tex in a Red Sox uniform. But there's a limit to what you should spend on a 'star' player. Spend too much, and it harms the team. It causes resentment among the other players, it raises the bar for the next free agent, and it ties up money better spent on player development.

When the Yanks signed A-Rod, they did not guarantee themselves a WS ring. And now they're breaking the bank over and over trying to secure one. You have to look at the big picture.

Then again, so does Teixeira. Apparently the Yankees aren't outbidding the Sox. That means everyone else still in the running IS an also-ran. The Angels have no closer, and aren't likely to come up with one anytime soon. The Nationals? Ha. And even if the Yankees are lying, they're STILL a lot more than one player away from contention. So Tex's 'big picture' is this: Take a staggering Sox offer that includes likely playoff and WS appearances (with the money and exposure that some with them), or grab top dollar and play for also-rans.

If Tex is the mensch they say he is, I don't see how there's any choice but Boston. But if he does go elsewhere, frankly, we were wrong, and did well to pass him by.

  1. First off, who cares if we overpay? This isn't your money going into the team. Either way, the ownership will raise ticket prices next year with almost certainty.

Texiera would be a perfect middle of the lineup guy. He's an incredibly solid defender, his OBP is pretty damn good even though his OPS is not top 5..

On a side note, it would be nice of the Sox built a new stadium that actually had capacity to sit 45-50,000 fans instead of the meager 38-39,000 that sells out months ahead of time. It's so hard to pay fair value to see a game these days. Paying 3 times ticket price on one of those reseller sites is absolutely ludacris. /end rant/

  1. This annual "the Red Sox are going to sign XXX" hype is getting really old. It started way back with A-Rod the first time around. Then it happened again when A-Rod opted out of New York. And now it's happening again. Can the Red Sox sign the guy first and then let's hype the signing? Please?

Posted by Ed December 19, 08 09:56 AM
  1. Yeah! Then when he put his numbers up in the playoffs, that was against crappy pitching too!

    wait a sec...

  1. I would be happy (more than happy) to have him. But I agree with management. We have reached our limit. If NY wants to sign Burnett to a five year contract (as if AJ Burnett will be pitching when he is 38 years old) after watching teams such as the Red Sox and Tampa Bay develop from the inside with a free agent or two to fill a hole but not an entire team, that's where their money gets them. As the Notes column noted on Sunday, that's what got Detroit where they wound up.

I was one of the people fooled by Detroit's off season, even while noting that unless the traded him Inge wandering around the field trying to find a place to play was probably not in their best interests. A year later and much wiser, you have to have questions about investing so much in a guy who displaces Lowell and moves Youk back to third. That said: it is worth doing at a reasonable price but not to let Boras try to use us against LAA or anyone else.

  1. I do not think the O's are the WOW offer either. It is not their style at this point. He is probably worth more to them because of the "Hometown" tag that puts more fans in the seats, a la cal ripken, but, Andy Macphail was hired a few years back to return that team to theri glory years 1966-1985.
He has gone young, traded their top talent and as a matter of fact, I think they have more top 100 prospects then any other team in baseball now. Actually they have 9 the next best team has 7.
Its probably the Nats. They are still at that stage where they think this is the way to get better/ They have a few young arms, but they are very far away. This kind of overpay looks like a"rrookie mistake". Jim Bowden is that.

Posted by Ryan December 19, 08 10:03 AM
  1. Texeira is a really nice player...but this is getting out of control.
Time to address the catcher situation and look for another starter in case Bowden/Buccholz arent ready.

  1. Good for the Red Sox. Enough is enough. If they are calling Boras's bluff good for them. If some team is giving him 10 years good luck to them. If he wants to be irrelevant in Wash. or Balt. good luck to him. If he goes to LA the Red Sox will still beat them. Love to have him in the lineup, but there has to be a limit. People everywhere are losing jobs, homes, cars and their life savings. If $184 million over 8 years isn't enough, then John Henry is right. If this is strictly a negotiating ploy by the Red Sox then we can sit back and watch it play out. They aren't going to let Boras play them for other teams. They're too damn smart for that. They brought Boras to his knees on DiceK and they are capable of doing it again. Hopefully he doesn't go to NY.

  1. I thought Teixeira was better than Manny Ramirez??? Isn't that why the Red Sox decided to trade Manny away last season. Now the Sox have no Manny and no Teixeira. Time to start panicking.

Posted by Colin December 19, 08 10:07 AM
  1. You're wrong. We DO need him. We need a big bat to protect Papi and make teams continue to pitch to Youkilis. There is a big hole in the middle of our lineup, no disrespect to those who filled that role when Manny was dealt.

Texeira is a .300 30HR 110RBI, switch hitting, gold glove first basemen. How many times is a player of this caliber available. And he is a player, not a cancer in the clubhouse ala Manny. Come to us Big Tex, we need ya. And you need us. Otherwise, we will see you in Baltimore, and forget you in Washington.

  1. PUT THAT MONEY TOWARDS PITCHING!!!!

Holy cow - we have the bats. Grab maybe an Abreu or someone cheaper if he costs too much and go get Peavy/Sheets/Lowe -- get us a stud #4 starter and we'll be fine.

As long as the Sox spend the money elsewhere and smartly, I have absolutely no problem w/ telling Tex to go screw.

    Posted by J.P. December 19, 08 10:13 AM
  1. And even if he were as good as his reputation, you have to ask - will he be this good 8 years from now? Unless he's 19 (and he isn't), the answer is clearly No.

I'd love to see Tex on the team for a reasonable contract, but don't do a Steinbrenner and lock in a guy until he's ready for Social Security. What Theo's been doing, works. What the Steinbrenners have been doing, hasn't.

GO YANKEES! I hope we get Tex. All you'll have is a 1st basement with a vagina for a mouth, a limping third baseman and an ineffective Papi! Back to 3rd place in the division wussies, where you belong!

  1. In 2004, RedSox Nation had not really heard of the Kevin Millar, Bill Mueller, Orlando Cabrera, and others. Look what that had got us!

In Theo we trust, at least 70-75% which is much better than any of would like to say for Cashman or Dombrowski (Tiger's GM)

Forget Boras and Teixeira, and surprise RedSox Nation

  1. I'm thinking it's a little about opportunity cost: If we don't spend the money on Tex, who will we spend the money on at a later date? There are only so many middle of the lineup hitters, and most of them will get locked up by their current teams. I haven't done the research, but does anyone know of any big name hitters set to hit the free agent market in the next couple years? On a related side-note, I'd hate to see Lowell traded in the near-term, but if there aren't going to be Tex-like options in the next couple years I think, then I think you have to swallow hard and do it because Lowell probably has 1 more reliable year left in him and after that we'll need someone of Tex's caliber.

  1. Henry is a smart businessman and the Red Sox know what the real game is.
Teixeira is not the difference between winning a world series and not. It is a known fact good pitching will always win out against good hitting in the long baseball season. Get the best pitching staff and you will be alot closer to a consistently winning ball club.

  1. Just a fan from NJ here, but figured I would chime in because of the roller coaster of events taking place. From the standpoint of a baseball fan in general, the decision should be a no brainer. And yes, in a sense I am biased towards Boston because of my love for the Red Sox.

Right now, according to reports, the yankees have not bid on Teixeira. So that leaves 4 known teams with offers, the Sox, the Washington Nationals, Anaheim Angels, and Baltimore Orioles.

From a free agent standpoint, does Teixeira want to win or does he want a payday? Here are my thoughts on each team, what they can offer outside of cash.

Anaheim Angels- They are a team with money, but what hitters? Sure they have Vlad Guerrero and Torii Hunter. But Vlads contract is up soon. You get Teix to protect Vlad in the lineup for one season, and then what? Do they extend Vlad's contract after this year? Or do they look for another bat? Their pitching is good, and they did win 100 games last year, but lost again to the Red Sox in the first round.

Washington Nationals- Maybe a hometown team, but can you name their lone 2008 All Star rep? Yea, I had to look it up too. Cristian Guzman. Nationals are never big spenders, and if they break the bank for Teix... he will not fix that team. You get paid to play for a loser the next 8-10 seasons.

Baltimore Orioles- Even with Nick Markakis and Brian Roberts, the O's were 28.5 games out of first in the East. Mark will not solve their woes. They have been reluctant to serve up big contracts to get big names in town, and tend to invest their money in veteran players for cheap (Kevin millar, Aubrey Huff types). Baltimore is looking to do right with their fanbase to bring a hometown boy back, and it would be fitting for the team he rooted for growing up to eventually land him, creating a 'childhood dream come true", but lets get real. Do the Orioles look like a contender with Teix on their roster? The Orioles have no great names in their rotation, nobody that strikes fear in the opponent. They will continue to be bottom dwellers

Boston- Very young core of guys, who will be with the team for the next 4-6 years. You look at Pedroia, Youkilis, Papelbon, Dice K, Beckett, Ellsbury, Lester, Buchholz, Masterson, Bowden and think thats a great foundation of proven MLB talent. They won the World series in 2007, and lost in the ALCS because they lacked a big bat. The team is devoted to winning, will spend the money to bring the proper pieces into town. The fans are true baseball fans, who can be unruly at times, but love the game. The atmosphere at Fenway is like no other. There is history there, there is respect, and there is just a feeling that gives you goosebumps. Boston is the best fit, even if they are offering less money

So if Teix wants to play on the East Coast... Boston is the best fit, based on opportunity to win a title. Anaheim he would be making a 8 year commitment to stay on the west coast.

If Teix wants a contender... it is narrowed to Anaheim or Boston

If Teix wants a friendly fanbase and friendly media ALL the time, Anaheim, Baltimore or Washington is prob the place to go.

If he wants to be a major piece of a title run, Boston will be his landing spot

Scott Boras has messed up negotiations in the past. Perhaps this is him trying to get more money for his client. or maybe there really is a better offer on the table, with a team that is a contender. guess we won't know until he finally reaches an agreement somewhere.

Posted by Hoss December 19, 08 10:31 AM
  1. The Red Sox appear to have pulled out with good reason. They may not be out of the running for Tex and will not allow emotions to deter them from continuing negotiations, if appropriate. It is hard to know if Boras has a legitimate offer from another club that is higher than the Red Sox, and only time will tell. Tex would be a valuable addition, and believe the Sox still want him.

  1. Making, maybe, a top 10 player into the top paying player in this market/economy doesn't make sense to me. And knowing the Sox already have Ortiz and Youk, it makes more sense to go get a catcher and possibly Peavy than spend money on Tex. Tex is good, not great. And those contract numbers are great...

Posted by Matt December 19, 08 10:36 AM
  1. So much depends on Ortiz. Is he the Ortiz of old or the Ortiz who was so feeble in the latter part of the '08 season? If he doesn't come back strong and the Sox don't land Texeira, then we are sunk. I know Texeira is going to be horribly overpaid no matter where he lands, but the Sox really need this guy.

    Posted by B. Finley December 19, 08 10:37 AM
  1. I understand why everyone thinks we need this guy (Teixeira), but for the price???? come on.... with the way the economy is going, these players are on crack.
Why are the Sox not looking into trading Clay Buchholz for Jarrod Saltalamacchia?

The Sox need a young catcher, and with all the tools Saltalamacchia has.......
I dont understand why the Sox are not pursuing this at all???
The best bet for the Sox........ sign Jason Varitek to a 2 year deal, with a 3 year option and have him work with Saltalamacchia

  1. I think the Sox bid him up in the hopes that the Yanks would sign him for huge dollars so as to limit their free agent options in the future. Tex is no better than Youk save for the fact that he is a switch hitter which in the grand scheme of things...who cares. He's a plus guy who can hit and field but is not going to carry a team....see 2008 Angels....to a World Series.

We all know JD is going to have at least 3-4 injuries keeping him out of the lineup 40 games so it would be better to have someone like Jermaine Dye for a little extra coin. Plus, how much of ex-World Series MVP Mike Lowell's contract will the 'Sox have to pay? Money better spent on the bullpen?

At the end of the day, only the Yankees can outbid Boston, and they're not gonna. Congrats Sox, you'll pay $184 million of a guy who got traded for Casey Kotchman.

"The Big Donkey" as they call him in Cincinnati, is an absolute beast. sure he has a low BA, but anyone who knows the first thing about baseball know BA is overrated. He plays hard, stays healthy, gets on base and has more power than arguably anyone else in baseball right now.

First of all, if you imply that ticket increases will pay for any overpayment of new talent and you go to the games, then "Yes" it is your money, isn't it?

Second, the Red Sox already announced the prices for next year. There will be no increase. Kind of negates your points.

  1. Would have been nice to see Tex in a Sox uniform, but honestly, if Lowell and Papi come back healthy, we're talking about an already-stacked line-up, with top-end pitching and a bullpen that looks as if it could be a real strength. All of that, plus the Sox will have the financial means and prospects to make a mega-deal when a young star becomes available. Like a young catcher (I do like Salty). All, in all, the Sox are already a contender next year. Tex is a luxury.

It's as if you have convinced yourselves that Boston is baseball nirvanna and anyone who wouldn't take less money or years to come here is equivalent to a terrorist. This move calls Boras' bluff. It also means the Sox will play hardball with Tek. Boras has endangered Tek's signing to get more for Texiera. What does that tell Tek?

  1. Wouldn't it be great to Boras and Tex end up with $24 million less and be in Washington for 8 loooooooong years. Good thinkin Tex, give your agent a nice Christmas present.

  1. If I hear one more "idiot" talk about "PROTECTING PAPI", Im gonna explode. Big Papi is Big Papi no more. He may bash 30hrs, but his average, doubles, and rbi's will all be down from what we are used to. If Tex does end up with the Sox, it is #3 Youkilis (premium 3 guy), #4Tex, and #5 Papi...... Anyone who talks about "protecting papi, watches to much tv, listens to the same sports shows too much..... and really has no original thoughts on the game at all.... essentially an "idiot."

  1. America is sick of both the Red Sox and Yankees.
    We've still got Japan, though!

  1. By the way.. Tex is smelling a lot like Mussina. That bguy had to wait till the very end to really achieve anyhting in NY. He was a mercenary... with little emotion. He was never the ace they thought they were signing. Tex will blast 35hrs, but he will do it quietly, no passion..... no excitement...... alah Mussina...

  1. Hey Steve, what has the Yankees done in recent years, have you forgotten the
beating the Sox gave them in 04 and how about 07. Dream on Yankees, that
new stadium won't change the age of your players.

Posted by Roland December 19, 08 11:03 AM
  1. Billy B - Franchises like players are not ultimately measured by the last few years but by the sum total of their record and image. You don't get into the Hall Of Fame by hitting .350 a couple of years and .250 the rest. The Red Sox as a franchise are a .250 team. The Yankees have won 26 World Championships to the Red Sox 7 and are unquestionably the most storied and respected franchise in sports. And you know it.

  1. John Henry is playing poker here. He had the best hand but the greedy pigs that Boras and Texiera are they wanted more. Now their best bidder has left the table leaving them with a lesser opportunity to win or having to live 2,800 miles from where he really wants to live.

He's not worth the money he's asking.

Posted by rob December 19, 08 11:12 AM
  1. why are you here Steve-O and johnny Lewis? kind of pathetic of you really

    typical New York

  1. And this why I stopped following Baseball. At $21,875,000 a year over eight years, Mark Teixeira should personally buy a hot and a cola for every fan in the stadium, at every game he plays in, for what ever team that is stupid enough to pay that kind of money for a baseball player. Nobody!! Absolutely nobody I don't care who he is, or how good he plays or swings a bat should get that kind of money.

  1. Boras is a tool, his last client he pushed for so many years and dough...Manny. And look how that turned out. Boras needs the Sox to take Tex for there to be a bigger market for Manny. Hopefully Tex is questioning Boras bit this morning, much like when A-Rod decided he was blowing it for him and did his own thing. At this point, who cares if he ends up in Boston - as long as it's not the Spankees. Theo and Henry rock and whatever they decide to do will be fine by me. Our team is sick and built to win, over the long term. Go to the Nats Texiera, please. Hilarious. Boras looks like a LEGO man, he needs to start giving his clients better advice, especially in this financial environment. It's obscene and greedy. Peace out.

  1. He's not worth it. The prize is the World Series title, not the highest payroll! What did that prove last year with the Yankees! Keep your eye on the prize not NY!

  1. Just a note and reminder regarding Lowell. Since when has he played a complete season healthy? It's either his hip, foot, etc.
I like the guy, but this talk about him coming back healthy? since when? He has always had problems reaching the end of the season.
He had 1 good year, his contract year.
I am also not convinced Papi will ever be the same either. And in case you have not noticed, Papi is starting to sound like Pedro the last year or so, constantly whining and telling management what he thinks they should do. He needs to get over himself. Not to mention all the complaining about balls and strikes? Please!

  1. This bidding insanity confirms why football is the most popular, because
the NFL has a salary cap. A team in Green Bay Wisconsin has the same
chance to win as one in New york City.

  1. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater just yet. We have only heard from Henry and Boras. No indication of what Tex is feeling right now. Plus, if consensus is that the Sox still land him, let's not get our panties in a bunch over this.
Remember, we are seeing the guts of this negotiation. Omelets are pretty messy while they are being prepared, but if done right, they are pretty sweet when done. With 24/7 sports coverage, we are all observing in the kitchen now instead of waiting patiently at our tables.
Patience Red Sox Nation. And if we don't get him, we are pretty decently stocked until we can pick up Holliday next year

  1. Would anyone on this blog need another MAN to tell you if you should sign or not sign a contract for $184 million dollars? All Tex needed to say if he is a MAN is someone give me a pen, no matter what team. He's only the hottest player available on the market he's not the best player in baseball, did he get the Angels over the hump last year, that would be a no. Is he needed to get the Red Sox over the hump this year, that would be a no. 533,000 people lost there REGULAR jobs last month, no I want more than $184 Million, sick........

  1. Ken Rosenthal lost any credibility w/ me w/ his "the Sox are racist" column a few months back. Now all the sheep on here are following his footsteps.....if you think the Red Sox do not need Teixera your crazy....this is an aging lineup....Pappi, Lowell, Drew, & Varitek (if he returns) are on the wrong side of 30.....

Posted by Rosenthalsux December 19, 08 11:58 AM
  1. Its amazing how dumb people can be on here. I guess you want to rely on an OLD Mike Lowell with a bad hip injury, an aging Papi who had a wrist injury. Youkilis who had a career year and might not repeat it, JD Drew who gets hurt when he sneezes, and a bunch of young kids. We need a big bat in the lineup. There were times during the course of the season when the offense was no where to be found. They need a bat in that lineup...

  1. The MVP arguement isn't a very good one at all. Only players on great teams are ever generally considered. The man is a great hitter and plays superb defense. He wasn't going to get any love anywhere else. If he's with the Angels, Blowsox, Yankees, wherever... he'll get his attention. There was no way he could have been considered for it in Texas or Atlanta. As far as OPS in this case, the NBA's PER, and whatever else... its all baseline means nothing statistical crap. How bout his OPS as an Angel? His numbers were much better there than when he was with the Braves.

  1. 70 years into this Red Sox thing and I have to laugh. This is a good team with the potential to be a champ if all the players come through. Obviously the toughness of the division will have something to say about that. But Texiera is not a one man team and getting him or not probably won't settle the catching, starter number five, or rest Papi and backup Drew when he goes down. I would rather kick back, let what happens happen enjoy a pressure-empty mediocre season, develop the minor league players and keep the money in the system. Let Henry pull his hedge fund through the depression, and come back stronger in a year or two. It might be good to shake some of the fair weather fans off the wagon and make for an easier ticket.(I should live so long)b

  1. Teixeira is not that great anyway, the Red Sox build teams the correct way, using the farm system. We win world series with home-grown players such as Beckett, Pedro, Schilling, Manny, and Dice-K.

  1. Solid move by the Sox ... set a market price for a player, and stick to it. It is a proven fundamental business strategy.

  1. This Henry, Theo, Boras fandango is hilarious. Appealing to all the new englandocentric drama queens in the hub of the universe and Athens of America. Texeira is OK or good but not top 5 in either league. Certainly MBM was a a more menacing figure coming to the plate in clutch situations. This situation is akin to the Boras/Beltran deal a few years ago when another less than top 5 talent got top 5 money. Enjoy chewing your fingernails to the stubs, maybe Dice K can fly in from Tokyo and recruit Texeira like Reggie and Sabathia.

  1. Hey Yankee fan- this is not about you! and you cant afford it (for once). Manny is your man cuz he's more of an immediate impact, will piss Bo Sox Fan off and is cheaper. You guys cant even afford to finish building your stadium let alone play in it. Your big bat was CC!- remember he says he can hit too!

  1. About those 26 World Championships - 10 Before WWII ended, 10 more before the Civil Rights Movement, and 6 since 1977. 0 since 2000. See a trend here? Yankees fans should also root for the Detriot Lions, they had 4 championships before JFK.

  1. 180 million?! Are you insane? We might as well give Manny $105 for four to come back (5 bonus) and still have 75 million for Derek Lowe!

The Angels had him for the boost and can't even get past us; what does that tell you?! Don't let this be an A-Rod mistake. How many championships have the Yankees won with that deal?

  1. The bull pen is the "offensive line" of baseball (if it's great, it's the engine that allows the other parts of the team to operate at highest potential). I would spend big bucks on pitching not hitting. The sox have plenty of bats and our defense is solid. Pitchers always break down. I would have 5 aces on my team with the best bullpen money can buy and I would have an everyday lineup of up and coming "hungry" players. not A-rods, Mannys, or Teixeiras. My team would win the world series every other year.

  1. In Theo we trust.

The Red Sox are smarter and better managed than inferior teams like the New York Yankees. Unlike NY, the Sox don't blow their wads every year on the most overpriced & underperforming free agent of the moment. Instead, the Sox construct teams that make it into the playoffs and win the World Series, also unlike the MFYs.

  1. Stick to your guns JH & Theo... Don't let Boras stick it (Ramirez) to you again. If Tex doesn't want to be here, I don't want to pay a dime to see him play here. At $175 million, maybe Lowe AND Peavy (if you guys can convince him) make better sense anyway.

Posted by JB December 19, 08 02:49 PM

  1. A guy I haven't seen anyone talk about is Joe Mauer. He is a FA in 2 yrs, can hit and is an excellent catcher. Don't spend the $$$ on Tex, give Tek 2/3 yrs, Lowell can play out his remaining 3 yrs, Lars should be ready by then. Spend the $$$ on locking up Youk and Paps and some more pen help with another decent starter

  1. PLEASE MARK MY WORDS !!!!! The Yerkees will step up and pay that $195 MILLION !! I''ll give the Steinbrenners credit....they go out and get their fans some players (for better or for worse)......they don't draw lines in the sand and they don't quit !!!

  1. John henry smart?!?!?

    Haha

His hedge fund went from 3.5 billion in assets when he bought the RED SOX to 260 million as of summer (less than AROD is worth)

With HANK paid 10 million in the 70's and the team with new Yankee stadium is worth more than 1.5 billion and yes is worth over 3 billion

Btw hate manny all you like, cause in pinstripes he will look nice!

Why do so many ex Boston players hate Boston

Why do so many ex yankees love NY?

Only think you guys have that we want is theo!

Anything you would mind having from the Yankees?

    CC, AROD, JETER, JOBA?!?!?
